Have grown some chills these year, only get a little before frost.

Please recommend 3 or 4 outdoor varieties which grow well and reliable production. I live in South England, but don't have green house.

@Tracy_x , there are lots of Chilli growers on GC . You need to advise what heat you would like , mild , medium or RED Hot!!!
I have grown Tokyo Hot for the last two years , a medium heat Chilli that crops very well . To grow chillis you need to start the seed around the end of January . By June it should be OK to put them out in a sunny spot.

Sorry, I don't grow outdoor varieties so can't help. :noidea:

You say you only got a little before the frost. What time of year did you sow them? They need to be sown early in the year to be able to give a long enough season to get a good crop. We sow ours end of Jan beginning of Feb.

I guess it is February, it grow very slow due to the cold weather, so it has lots of small green chillis when frost touched

Not a chilli eater really although I do like a bit of heat in certain kinds of food, but cant advise on varieties because to me they are all hot,, I just put more in if I want it hotter.:snorky:

That said, I have grown them and to be honest I found they cropped better the second year.
I'm not convinced they are possible outside as they need a much longer growing season than sweet peppers which are only just about possible outside in the UK.
Any outdoor protection, especially early and late might help the situation.

I only grow two varieties, Cayenne and Jalepeno both medium hot but I only grow them in a greenhouse to ensure a good crop. Even a temporary 'blow away' greenhouse would be better than outside as Chillis hate wind and particularly cold wind.

Take a look at the South Devon Chilli Farm seed pages. They're not the cheapest but each description gives an accurate idea of heat and more often than not an idea of how long the fruits take to ripen.
