    This post will bore the pants off 99% of GC, read no further :biggrin:
    @fat controller ,@longk , @Sandy Ground and any others....
    Just found this 1937 GM video tutorial on diff gearing. It is , obviously , in 1930's style. But I have never seen it explained better than this :blue thumb: Diff gearing always has a touch of wizardry to it I think !

      I didn't find it boring as i've had a few go bang in my time, the worst one was when the lorry diff went bang in scotland was waiting for the repairs for 4 days, now that was boring

        I didn't find it boring either. Next week need an explanation of a limited slip diff, and in the meantime I'm even going to pretend I know what one is.

          It is very well put across. Gearboxes and differentials will always have that air of mystery about them (especially gearboxes, which will terrify anyone feeling inquisitive enough to take one apart)

            I'm brave enough to take one apart. As long as it's not mine. And as long as I don't have to try to stick it all back together.

              Often wondered how it works.
              I presume its a bit "different" when it comes to front wheel drive?

                    Few years back, the Mr was driving his old man's car and something went in the gear box (we just pulled into our street, thankfully) couldn't change gear at all, something was rattling around and a nasty grinding sound if he tried anything.. His old man took it apart and took a good 2 weeks putting it back together, he swore never to fix one in his life again :noidea::heehee:

                    Quite like that car @"M" :blue thumb:

                      Diffs (limited slip or otherwise) and gearboxes are really simple. But I love these old information videos which cover all manner of subjects. There's an earnestness about them that I find amusing yet endearing.

                      Nope, just the same.

                      Noooo, gearboxes are fun, especially when one converts a three speed automatic to a six speed "tiptronic."
