CANNA - 2017

2017 same as usual here , just my two varieties . Rhizomes are stored in a cold garage ready for March planting in doors. I must try something new next year ! Just a matter of getting the logistics right , they do take a lot of room up in the house before they can move out to the GH.

 

Got off to a bad start here. I started 30 C.paniculata seeds off last Tuesday and now have 28 germinating! I've just started a couple of other species too.

If you want some C.paniculata seed pm me as I have plenty to spare.

 

I have tried Canna but with little success. The latest attempt was down to the Canna 2015 thread. I have tried rhizomes these send up leaves max about 18" tall, die down and repeat next year. One has moved itself around the bed it was put in for about 7 years now. It's not been turfed out as it not got in the way of anything.
So overall I "canna" grow Canna.

 

John Thanks for that; I might try big pots. I had wondered whether my garden was too well drained for them.

 

I struggle a bit with Cannas grown in the ground, I think they get too dry as I'm not one to use gallons of water on the garden.
Containers give the best results for me.

 

As far as I know the virus is spread by sap sucking insects, mostly aphids.

Buying from Garden centres is a bit dodgy as often the stock is already infected when you buy.

You can buy from good suppliers but that is no guarantee the virus will not strike at some time.

Should add you can also spread the virus yourself if you have one affected plant, during division, using the same knife without sterilising it first.

 

Since sticking to the rule of only growing from seed I've been virus free. Clearly it is an advantage that I have no near neighbours growing them.

 

Yep, ok if you are not interested in large flowers, most species, I find, have lots of leaves, grow tall with flowers that aren't really worth bothering about, ................just my opinion.

Well there is no real protection, just keep on top of pests, be careful when dividing, and pray.
Keep any new plants separate until you can assess if they are virus free.

However, Canna paniculata is quite short, early to bloom, long blooming and as an added bonus has what I regard as the best Canna flowers..........
