WHAT'S YOUR WEATHER LIKE - 2017

Yep, that happens if you stand outside and keep breathing in deeply.

 

The frost disappeared about 8 p.m. last night although the temperature was 32F . When I got home about 11.30 p.m. it was still at 32F and there was a light misty dampness in the air (not enough to call it rain). This morning we have very clear skies with the moon, Venus and the stars visible.

@pete This goes back a long way. The thick London fogs go back 500 years because of the use of coal. By the late 1700's and through to the mid 1800's it gradually got worse until London regularly had very thick fogs that were a yellowish green (usually much more yellow). In those days pea soup was made from split peas and ham and was a yellow colour and by the mid 1800's people were saying the fog looked like pea soup. Herman Melville (author of Moby Dick) actually wrote about it when he lived in London around the 1850's.

During Victorian times it also became know as London Particular because of the black particulates that stuck to everything. When I was at school our teachers always called it London Particular (I think that was because we used to have pea soup a lot for school dinners and they didn't want us comparing it to the horrible smogs ). For a period of time pea soup also became known as London Particular and I think that you could probably still find recipes under that name.

Around the turn of the 20th Century they brought in legislation to curb the emissions from factories but they couldn't restrict the use of low grade coal for domestic use as it was used for heating and cooking. This low grade coal was full of coal dust that made the pollution worse. I remember that when we had our coal delivered (our basement was the coal cellar) clouds of coal dust used to float in the air.

The last great fog/smog was in 1952 and I remember it very well. We couldn't see our feet as we walked (could just about see our knees) and the busses still ran but the conductor walked in front of the bus carrying a flaming brand.

The 1952 fog killed 12,000 people and lots of domestic animals. They brought in the Clean Air Act in 1956.

Good evening yes its been a little warmer to day and its nearly 5pm and still light

 

Today was another very sunny day and no frost. January has been very good for electricity production. My panels have produced four times the amount of electricity than that in November.

 

Higher and thinner clouds in the skies with the Sun trying, but not succeeding, to shine through. There was an absence of breeze again and the temperature rose to 45f by mid day after a morning temperature of 34f. The temperature at the moment is 42f and the pressure reading is 1005hpa.
