So you can dry things like root veggies too? I presume that the end result (parsnips or carrots for example) will need rehydrating before use?

Yes you can dry just about anything. Not really root veg but I've dried beetroot and a shed load of pumpkin, we just add them to casseroles and in our slow cooker so they rehydrate whilst being cooked.

You can make fruit "leathers" with them too. (Or Veg leathers if that is your preference; just for the record, vegetable yogurts are being promoted as the latest health food "craze", so you could be on to a winner there ;) )

I do have a dehydrator, but, mine came with a temperature dial indicator that is really squiffy! Now, all I really need to do is un-stick the temperature thingy and re-stick it at its proper dial level - somehow that has just seemed like a bit too much of a hassle :heehee: But, I really should because ... as well as drying fruits/veggies, you can also use it to make fruit "leathers", Beef Jerky through to Potpourri!! (sp) ... think of the "gift" potential in those! :heehee:

Am well up for crisps and beef jerky!! Dehydrator has been added to list of things to get.

Don't think I fancy veg yogurt though.

We've had one for a few years now and it's great for preserving veg and fruit. One great advantage is that dehyrated produce takes very little space, we use self-seal bags and pop them in a big box. Dried produce also seems to keep longer than frozen, we used 2015 tomatoes today in a sauce.
We dry - tomatoes, apples, carrots, leeks, peas, beans, apples. In fact just about anything we have a surplus of apart from green leafy veg.

Not necessarily, such as adding to a soup/etc. recipe to thicken it, rather than boil/simmer to thicken, so technically rehydrating after use.

Only used mine to dry puffballs in the greenhouse. If I plug it in it trips the 230v inverter

As I type, it is doing it's thing in the kitchen dehydrating banana, blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, lemon, mango and rhubarb :hapydancsmil:

I recognise that model FC, good luck with it.

This may be obvious - you need to check every couple of hours how each type is doing, remove the ones that are 'done'. You'll get the hang of it, I kept records on heat and time length but usually did only one food item at a time.

It seemed to offer the most features at a reasonable amount of money, and if it is as good as the vacuum sealer that we have from the same company, it will do well :)

At the moment, we are checking every half hour or so, purely because we are interested. The bananas should be done in the next few hours, but I am dubious at the moment - I think I might have cut them a bit thick.

Am I right in thinking that its a bad idea to mix sweet and savoury in the one machine? Such as the likes of onion and garlic being done on the same time as bananas and apples on other layers?
