A colleague bought a new Auris 3 years ago, I've been in it a couple of times. It seems very good quality and the reliability has been spot on. His can run for the first couple of miles on battery power, so it improves mpg. Don't know if they are all Hybrid but it seems a cool feature to me.

There is a hybrid version here, but apparently its plagued by problems. The petrol and diesel versions do have a good name for being reliable cars.

Why not compare the Auris to the Honda Civic Touring?

Be careful if you are thinking of buying a diesel car as the government are trying to get diesels off the road as there are more polluting,or so they say and from what I heard the other day on the news there might be some sort of announcement in next months budget and sales of diesel cars are already going down according to the news report:sad:

If you are looking at the Civic, there is a brand new model coming out shortly so you may get a good deal on the existing model.

Toyota are generally bullet-proof and have a great reputation for reliability. Honda Civic is another worthy contender - and of course, both are built in the UK :)

Also consider - Nissan Pulsar (I have a colleague who has one, and its a really nice motor), the Hyundai i30 (5 year Warranty, and pretty decent dealers), and the Kia Cee'd (7 year warranty!!)

There isn't a Honda dealer anywhere near us  - just in case something needs doing under warranty.

I'll probably be looking at Hyundai, Kia and Skoda tomorrow - if I have time.

I was chatting to Toyota about discounts. They said they don't give any discount for cash but will give £1,500 off if I take 0% finance!!! Well, that's the first step in the negotiations if we decide on their car. :)

It might help to get some quotes online, I just clicked on orangewheels.com and they show a £3,502 discount. If you look at the last line "Our Discount Price includes the £1,500 Finance Deposit Contribution from TOYOTA UK when taking TOYOTA finance.
If buying cash please add £1,500 back onto the Discount Price above."

In the past I've taken along print-outs of online car deals and plonked them on the salesman's desk as the starting point for price negotiations :)

This thread has come along at just the right time for me as I'm currently looking at changing cars too, hope you don't mind if I join in here Shiney. :)

My current car is a Ford Fusion, which I've been more than happy with for the past eight years, so I'm looking for something similar. Ford no longer make the Fusion, so it's going to have to be something different this time.

                      A few basic requirements:

Petrol, mid-range engine size around 1.4/1.5.

4 door hatchback with plenty of boot room.

Reliable, I do around 8,000-10,000 miles per year and rely on the car to get to work.

Air-con would be good, and I particularly like the Ford heated front windscreen feature, does any other manufacturer do this or is it exclusive to Ford?

                      Any recommendations or advice appreciated.

The Quickclear windscreen used to be just on Fords and is a great feature and one of the reasons why we stuck with Fords in the past. The patent has now run out and some other manufacturers now offer it. I bought it as an £95 extra on my Mini. I consider it an essential option same as when central locking first came out.
