How hot does a greenhouse get???

Hi everyone, I'm now realising the importance of vents in a greenhouse, it's been a nice sunny day here in South Wales today. Late this afternoon I went inside Doris and looked at the thermometer I've placed in there and it was reading 35c/100f. I was amazed how hot it was in there, I know the roof vents, louvre and doors were closed but flipping heck!! How warm could it get inside on a hot July day with everything closed??

 

If the sun shines Spacemunkey it's going to warm up in there whatever the time of year. During the summer you may need some shading for it as well as windows and doors being left open all day.

 

Wow!!!! That's proper hot, even factor 50 sunscreen wouldn't protect tomatoes from that heat lol. But seriously I can see why ventilation is so important inside s greenhouse

 

What type of shading do you guys recommend if it gets to hot?

 

I can't answer as I haven't got a green house BUT it was lovely today

Hmmm, there you've got me. Where I used to live (the Isle of Man) it was never hot enough to need shading. I've only been here in Scotland since last September.

 

However for extended periods your plants will be wilted, then stunted.

Had first hand experiencewwith this last year.

And I landed up using landscape cloth as shading try to fight it

 

I'll wait and see what the summer is like, fingers crossed it's going to be glorious For the time being I'll stick with the roof vents, louvre and door options. This greenhouse stuff can be expensive. Oh yeah I fitted my cantilever braces yesterday to make Doris even more sturdy

 

One last question before I go to sleep, have any of you guys started sowing seeds yet for your tomatoes etc?? Please don't laugh as I've said in my previous posts, I'm totally new to growing and I'm really unsure when to start sowing.

 

Thank you Armandii, it's just I've been looking online and some recommend February others March. Also on the seed packaging it says between February and April. It's a little confusing for a complete idiot, I mean a complete novice such as myself lol
