It is. And here's why.

When you talk to someone who is there next to you, your brain doesn't need to do too much work. We've been hearing people talk since we pop into the world. As long as our ears work, then we are naturally good at understanding people speaking.

When we talk on the phone, our brain has to work very hard. That's because we are not hearing human speech at all. Someone speaking into a phone will have their voice sampled a mere 8000 times per second, with a resolution of a mere 8 binary digits. To make it fit into such compressed data feed, the compression algorithm throws away huge amounts of data. Subtleties of breath as a person forms and shapes there words, that's gone. Higher pitched tones, gone. Harmonics as abundant in 'S' and 'F' sounds, gone. Subtle changes in volume, ironed out. Then in spewing forth this crude approximation at the receiving end, several milliseconds out of sync from when it was spoken, it's pumped out through at best a speaker that isn't even optimised for human speech.

Of course we don't necessarily notice all this loss of information. That's because the human brain is brilliant. It takes this crude, feeble approximation of the original speech, and it fills in the gaps. It does this based on learned experience. The crude, inadequate approximation of speech makes your brain call up memories of speech that sounded broadly like what you're hearing, and links that up with your understanding of the language, your expectation of what the person is saying based on both bits you hear in the current conversation as well as past experience of talking to that person or about that subject. The brain takes all of this and mashes it all together, to effectively rebuild the information that the person on the phone is trying to convey. Your brain just does this because it's brilliant. But it does take a lot of brain power, even if you don't realise it. You can prove this with a simple but tedious experiment. Speak to someone on the phone for a couple of hours, then speak to someone in person for a couple of hours. See which one makes you must mentally tired afterwards.
