Thanks @fat controller and @HarryS . Correction: they are offering £3500 less than the list price. It's a Toyota Yaris 1.33 VVT-i with some extras; tinted windows, sat nav and extra chrome (which I wouldn't pay extra for anyway). An almost 5 year warranty is included but no free servicing or any other perks. I looked on the free valuation site, Harry, and that price is about £1000 less than what they are asking...........so maybe not such a good deal after all.

Nope - essentially, although it has single digit mileage, it is a used car; this is made slightly worse by the fact that the new 17 plate came out a few days ago which only serves to make a 66 plate 'look' older. I reckon if you shopped around, you could get that sort of discount off a brand new one.

The Yaris is a very good car, and Toyota are generally bomb-proof, so the car itself is not the problem, they just want too much for it; them only offering the balance of the warranty is downright cheeky to be honest - Kia and Hyundai more often than not will re-start the warranty when you buy a used car that is up to a year old - Kia give 7 years warranty, so that effectively makes it almost 8 on a used car, which tells me they are really confident that their product is not going to give problems. Take a look at the likes of Carwow and see what price they can offer you for the same car.

@Redwing , here is aToyota Yaris 1.33 VVT-i Icon 5-Dr with deliver mileage ,in your area
        Toyota Yaris 1.33 VVT-i Icon 5-Dr 5dr
        £10495 with delivery mileage
£10557 on the Confused.com valuation site
This car does not have sat nav . So may be this is your target price ?
Another thing if you keep your car for 5 yearsish. Don't worry if the price is a little more than the book estimate . If its the one you want get it !
The car gurus on here will always give you a bit off advice when you spot something you like. And Autotrader is a wonderful site for searching :blue thumb:
Toyotas and Hondas are solid cars , very reliable . You may pay a little more for the "Honda" badge . Toyotas prices may be a little better.
        Hope this helps.

If you can't beat the dealers offer, then it could be the one for you then, especially if you like the car. At the end of the day, it is going to come with the vast bulk of a 5 year warranty, so you aren't going to have any worries for a long while and by that time it will be a 5 year old car that has had two owners and worth exactly the same as any other 5 year old car of its type.

One thing is for sure, won't beat Toyota for reliability or customer service (their dealers are exceptionally good), so your ownership is likely to be happy one.

Thanks @HarryS ! That Toyota dealer has 6 or 7 "delivery mileage" Yaris'. As far as I'm concerned it's a new car. I'll go look at them next week; it's not too far. It's not my nearest Toyota dealer but it's within striking distance. Interesting you mention Hondas as I was also considering a Jazz, which is what I have now (an old one) and it has served me very well but there do not seem to be really good offers on them now. It seems like now, before the end of the month, is the right time to buy an 'almost new' car.

Who'd have thought a gardening forum would be a good place to get car buying advice!? :wow: Thanks guys. :blue thumb: Anything else I should know when negotiating?

I laughed when my dad bought himself a brand new octavia estate with a measly 1.2 litre engine in it. I said 1.2 litres struggles to pull a small car, in something is big as an octavia you'll be better opening the door, sticking your right leg out and scooting.

I was wrong. Not only is it perfectly responsive and very capable, it's not even revvy and whiny like I'd expected from a small engine. In fact it felt more like maybe 1.8 or 2 litre.

The reputation they have that I know of is that they have chocolate piston heads. Or is that problem exclusive to the impreza?

As far as I know @clueless1 it is the Impreza that suffers, and more specifically those that have been ragged hard.

@Redwing - you are right that now is a good time to buy, not least because of the tax changes that are coming next month; that too is another advantage of buying pre-registered car. And yes, whilst they are technically used cars, they are of course the same as a brand new car (they too usually come with single digit mileages on them). Good luck!

Only correct if you have a car in the first five tax bands! Rates from £0 - £135 per year.

The other eight tax bands range from £145 - £515 per year.

If you're paying those you will continue to pay at the same rate.

If you have a new registered car after 1/4 then you will pay between £0 and £2,000 in the first year and then £140 per year - unless your car cost more than £40,000, in which case you will also pay an additional £310 per year.

So, it depends purely on the emissions of the vehicle whether you win or lose.

True, but if you are buying a Yaris, you would lose under the new rules.

The upside is that by the time I am ready to buy my next car, someone will have taken the hit for the higher emissions and I will be able to buy a 7-litre supercharged fire-breathing monster and only pay £140 a year tax.........

then again, back in the real world, it will actually be another fairly mundane hatchback

@Redwing , If you view this Autotrader search below . It seems Toyota Tunbridge Wells have 6 Yaris 1.33 with delivery mileage from £10250 to £11389 . Not sure why the £1000 spread , may be metallic paint or leather seats . This compares to Carwow offers of £16300, new on a 17 plate.
May be best to give them a call , to book a viewing ,say you are interested in the Yaris and ask for a trade in estimate on your car ( if you are trading it in ) does not matter what condition it is in. They may offer to hold a car for a £100 returnable no quibble deposit over the phone
