The question was asked of a fictitious supercomputer. Being a computer it used international standards for certain things, including its internal representation of numbers, letters and symbols. That standard is the almost universally accepted ASCII code, which indexes each character with a seven binary digit number (the 8th digit was originally reserved as a checksum, but was later adopted for an extended character set).

The symbol at index position 42 in the ASCII code is the asterisk, which in computing circles is widely accepted as the standard thing to represent the multiplication symbol.

But the asterisk (ASCII 42) also had another common use in computing. It was (and still is but less commonly now) now used in a programming construct called pointers, which were incredibly powerful in computing terms, but very, very vulnerable to programming errors.

Good god what have I started? here was little miss me innocently offering a reward (extremely debtable now that I have reached maturity and some) all I was hoping for was a suggestion re possible deterrant to cattle eating my plants however.......looks like I could be receiving quite a bit more than that.
