Skip diving - found bamboo

You probably know I like my freebies and quite bonkers. I found some bamboo in the green waste, black stemmed and some normal stuff..could/should I take cuttings? Got rooting powder and they're currently sitting in the sink. Worth a shot?

I'd keep it in a bucket till you work out if it's one of the non spreading types or the one that won't stop until it reaches the Severn Bridge.

 

Ta Zigs, I think I knew I was going to go for it anyways! They'll be going in big pots on the side of the house not in the ground (if they root ) so not worried about them taking over

Not really up on bamboo, but does it root from cuttings?

 

Great find Linz nothing better than getting your own baby plants growing heartily from cuttings you got for free i for one regularly arrive home with pockets bursting with random bits of foliage & shrubbery lol happy snipping & fingers cross they root readily for you

 

Been having a gander on google, root cuttings are the way apparently.. oh well I'll give stem cuttings a go!

I have heard of bamboo stem cuttings taking.
But TBH, I think it's a long process.

Bamboo grow much better from rhizomes.
And P nigra is really common.
Prob not worth it in this case.

 

Yeah there is the option of buying it but I seen it and thought why not, I've got nothing to lose except a dabbing of powder and a lil bit of soil

 

Take as many as you possibly can from what you've got & cross your fingers & toes that at least one roots...thats all we can do, try & hope for the best most bamboos are really fast growing & once its taken off & a decent size you'll be dividing it regularly & wishing the bloody thing would just stop growing for 5 mins lol :rasp: i divided my one last year &........im gonna have to do it again this year

 

Will do, thanks for optimism! Lol I'd be quite happy with a 20ft x 20ft row of bamboo on one the side of the house tbh! I've got one f. muriele (No idea on spelling, not running out to have a look) but it hasn't grown all that much since I bought it last Oct .. edit : hope it takes off this year!?

 

Linz, it didn`t cost anything so you have nothing to lose. The black bamboo is clump forming rather than spreading. I would treat the cuttings as you would hardwood ones. Cut about a half inch below a leaf node, with the cutting about 6" to 8" long.

No probs M but I don't think it will take.. No amount of sink drenching revived it think it was in the skip too long before I saved it. It's in but not holding much hope
