I grew sweetcorn last year for the first time in years.
I grew F1 Sundance from Suttons.
Each plant had two good sized cobs.

It grew like crazy, no looking back and was ready in August, if I remember correctly, so much better than the old varieties I remember struggling with.

I can thoroughly recommend Swift. I've grown them for the past two summers with very good results. The flavour is excellent too. :dbgrtmb:

Thanks Trunky, they'll both be sown anyways :) Is it true you shouldn't put two different types next to each other, I read it interferes with flavour/cross pollination?

I've read that too, which is why I grew mine at home last year with good results (no other neighbour grows veggies). This year I'm trying at the allotment too, where lots of other folk grow them. Should be an interesting comparison.

I cant see how pollination with another variety can be a problem.
The cobs will still be of the variety grown, surely??
It would only matter if you intended growing on the resulting seed

Sounds like a load of old boll*cks to me, but then what do I know.

Do you actually think a "real" person can determine the difference between super sweets, sugar enhanced, standard varieties?

I'd like to get someone who knows about genetics to get involved as it sounds like rubbish to me.

Haha.. Ahh nah, probably not no. It's popped up a few times when I'm looking at corn.. being young and naive I'm trying not take everything I read at face value so have to question it

Oh dont believe me, I'm the sceptical type.
I just think it's probably a bit overdone when it comes to the ordinary person growing a bit of sweetcorn.
Maybe if you were growing next to a field of maize ??

The thing that just seems wrong to me is this, if I grow apples, it doesn't matter what kind of apple tree pollinates it, if the variety is for eg, a cox, the apple will be a cox, only the resulting seeds will be affected.
Now I know with corn that maybe slightly different, but I'm struggling to see why?

Did a google to see if I could find out, nothing about other varieties affecting it that I found.

But I did find out that the closer they are planted together, the less cobs they produce.

Yeah I get what your saying but isn't it the seeds we're eating? I'm thinking too much into this, sod it I'll just grow both :noidea:
