I'm hoping it is....but may be too early to tell. This was hidden behind a conifer in the Sunny Border. Any thoughts?

I have several clumps of the orange and red varieties. Your picture looks very similar to how mine look at the moment .

Looking at the dead leaves it could possibly be Iris sibirica but the new leaves look a bit thicker than Iris.

Looks remarkably like Montbretia from the surface
It looks like some rhizomes were pretty exposed/ bare of soil. Moving them may not have done harm but the main thing is to ensure there are no air gaps in the roots as this could lead to rotting or fungal diseases under the soil. A bit of loose, dry compost could be put underneath it if you're in any doubt. Then give them a watering.

Thanks @Mowerman I dug the rest of it it out in a gigantic clump.(thank god i had a trolley to move it front back to front garden) Removed some slugs that were living in it!! And then gave it a good kelching. Fingers crossed it is crocosmia. :snork:

Digging out in clumps is better for transplanting (as long as you haven't got any major weeds that could be transplanted to your other garden).

Slugs don't seem too keen on Crocosmia for some reason. Maybe they were over-wintering or had sights on the decomposing foliage from last year. Who knows?

But would be very surprised if it is Crocosmia as they are usually bulbs with very small and fine roots that gradually create extended corms that easily break apart when uplifted. The large tubers and roots/rhizomes look more like Irises as @Silver surfer and @Anthony Rogers suggested. Sorry :cry3:

Poops. Oh well! Can always move it back. He he. Wanted that sunny border in the back clear anyway as I've done a redesign. It just needs a last dig over and my autumn plug plants hardening off, then I'm ready to get going! :hapfeet:

As has been said It looks like an Iris. Crocosmia come from bulbils rather than rhizomes, also, you wouldn`t dug them all out in one go. @Anthony Rogers Montbretia is the OLD name for Crocosmia, the name was changed about 20 years ago.
