OK, I have a notion for building myself a nice planter, my mock up image below:

    tower1.png

My idea is to have the central column pass right up the middle (so each planter level would have it come through the middle of the 'floor' of that planter level, if that makes sense), then attach two horizontal supports to either side of the central upright, to then mount the square frame for the bottom of each planter, something like this (rough) sketch below:

    tower2.png
I am then thinking that a flat timber base screwed down onto the bottom frame, with the outer clad in tongue and groove (with it extended lower than the actual 'box' to hide the supports underneath). The bit I really can't figure out is how I would then support the top of the T&G to maintain the box shape?

You could buy a dozen shelf brackets for £3 (screwfix) but fit them internally (ie:upside down so they are hidden within the planter
Sink the centre post into the ground with fence post cement

If it was me, then I would use 4 cross pieces to each box. The lower and middle boxes would use a combination of a dado joint and halving joints. The top box a cross halving set in a bridle. Use timber with a decent thickness, and no need to support the top of the t&g. To avoid screwing into end grain on the boxes, I would use dovetails or possibly just gusset them.

Sorry Jack, I should have said that it is to sit on top of a paved area at my front door. I was thinking about having the bottom 3-4 inches protruding out of the bottom as a sort of middle leg, with blocks of the same screwed on at each corner to make feet. the shelf brackets are a good idea though.

OK - I am definitely not a joiner..... :cry3: and maybe this will give you some insight as to why I am so impressed with your woodworking skills....

dado - I know that as a band of wood that runs around a wall just under half way up; dado joint, not a clue.

halving joints - to me, that would be something that the yoofs would do with their smoking materials.

bridle - I've used plenty of them in the past, for steering horses.

dovetails - I actually know what these are, but have no idea how to make them

gusset - crotch on a pair of trousers?

Good info there @Sandy Ground :dbgrtmb: It wouldn't be of any use to me because I think you need to have tools to make them :snork: I have a hammer and a screwdriver :snorky:.

@shiney you are correct there, I do.

This project fascinates me for some reason. Probably because its a relatively simple idea, but has so many variations in both design and construction.

That is most likely because the guy with the idea is fairly simple, and is almost certainly reaching way beyond his capability.

Thanks for the info on the joints - still not overly sure I would be able to recreate them though.

Think I would keep it simple, make three boxes the size you want them out of treated timber.
Possibly just gravel boards, depends on how posh you want to make it.;)

Get a central post, possibly 2x2, not sure on the scale of this, cut a hole in the bottom of each box that will take the central post.
Then screw maybe 2x1 to the post on each side to support the planter boxes.
Which is I think basically what you were saying in post #1

As Armandii states stability would be the big problem, its going to be totally top heavy and unstable in anything other than calm conditions.
You could add a couple of lead weights to the bottom box??

Unless you were thinking of adding outriggers :snork:

I was actually thinking of a couple of bricks in bottom box of the planter @pete, and although the drawing doesn't show it too well, the intention is for the planting boxes to reduce in size as they go up..... although I haven't come up with any actual specifications yet.

One of the reasons I mentioned using dado joints for the bottom two boxes was that it would allow the post to go through the floor of the bottom box. That would allow the use of one of these...

                                142700.jpg

....to anchor the whole thing securely in the ground. Doing it this way would also mean that direct contact between the wood and the ground would be avoided therefore reducing the speed at which the wood decays. Also, dont forget to use stainless or outdoor fasteners for the whole thing!
