Thanks @JWK i'll try have a look what the floor situation is in the greenhouse...its got insulation panels pn the floor and wood boards in the centre to walk on. Once I've planted out all my plugs i'll be giving it a good clear out, taking off the bubble wrap insulation etc.

Mine have also just started to flower but they don't need to be outside just yet, if they get cold and turn purple it could take them a few weeks to recover.

Thanks John. How much longer can they stay in the 9cm pots?

Mine are almost at that stage, wouldn't risk it just yet, another couple of weeks to harden off then perhaps put them out.

If they are outgrowing their pots just pot on to the next size up. Mine have never gone out (into the greenhouse) before 1st week in May - it's obviously weather and your local conditions dependent

Mine are nowhere near being ready to go out to the greenhouse. Still quite small on windowsill but they'll catch up soon enough

I'd need around 11m2 of greenhouse space if all my 264 toms were in pots that big, that's a 12 x 10' greenhouse with staging both sides of 600mm path and across far end :rolleyespink:

My toms go from pricking out of seed compost into:

                  40x cell trays
                  24x cell trays
                  60 x 60mm pots
3" dia. pots (outdoor toms are sown later and planted out at this size)
                  100 x 100mm pots
3L Round pots (planted in polytunnel borders)

Oh heavens, @Scrungee , I only have about 20 plants in total and I'm giving some of them to my son.

I can't imagine have that many plants but then again, we seem to have much smaller properties over here. You'd think in a land the size of mine, we'd have larger lots for the houses at a reasonable price. But no, we don't.

                      Hi all,

I need to prick out toms ASAP.

Should I move them into 3 inch pots or should I go bigger? They will stay in the house for the next few weeks before going into greenhouse and surplus given away. I will plant them in pots so that there is about 1-2 inches above compost level, I am lead to believe that this encourages more root growth.

If you're only needing to wait a week or two to put them out, then yes, the small pots would be okay. At least IMHO. :)

Have a look a this post above 2017 Tomato Growing

3" Pots appear far too big for those seedlings.

The reason why they're spindly is lack of light, but if you always pot on to the minimum sized container, you'll be able to keep them closer to your light source.

They are in the front window which gets lots of light from midday onwards. It iscthe only place that I can put them, other than the porch, but this gets so hot. I have no heat in the GH so canny put them in there.
