2017 Tomato Growing

I transplanted about 50 toms in the last 3 days. Still about 50 to go.

 

Well...

At first I sowed normal amount of seeds
then I saw this post ......

 

I've got a small tomato plant thats already grown some flowers....should i nip them off?

You must get into tomato seed saving, dozens of free seeds from every tomato., you'll be able to sow hundreds, if not thousands of tomatoes!

 

I have a few with flowers, planted one for a start in a blowaway house, all zipped up as it's cold today.

I'm sure I read somewhere you can't save from F1, is that wrong or right? I've only got one, "heartbreaker vita".. will it make any difference if there's other varieties being grown in a poly?

I'm actually growing "100's and 1000's" sharp, currant sized things. Loved them last year.

 

You can save them, but they may not grow true to type. Tomatoes have what's known as a perfect flower, with both stamens and carpels, so it's unlikely they'll cross with other varieties growing nearby

Tomato friendly weather is here at last! Left 147 plants outside last night. 90% of my toms will be off to polytunnels today, hopefully never to return.

There's exceptions, some Currant and Potato Leaf varieties have flowers that don't fully enclose the style (female bit) and are capable of being cross pollinated. On beefsteak tomatoes fused blossoms (AKA megablooms) also may not fully enclose the style(s).

 

I have planted mine outside today in a fairly big crisp oblong basket i got from work,lined it with compost bags and layers of comfry leaves in the compost Tom humb i think they are called,they have flowers and im hoping they will be fine

 

I have eaten my ripe ones

 

Are these ready to plant out now? (Getting impatient)



And have these got sun scorched in the greenhouse or is summink up?

Theyre all those Franchi San mazarno or cherry toms.

 

Harden them off first Snork, put them out during the day and bring them in at night for a week
