BEST SUPPLIER OF COMPOST - 2017

Been doing a bit of mixing today.
Not very scientific I know but it usually turns out alright.
Got three bags of MPC, three of JI and three sharp sand, took four mixes but I also think by doing this it breaks down the lumps in the MPC and puts more air into the compost.
Always seem to end up with a bit more than I started with so something is going on.


The baked beans are an optional extra.

 

Thats the way using a cement mixer to do the hard work, I like it :-)

 

What I do for my clematis is 3:1 mix
3 parts good quality compost & 1 part John Innis no 3
I picked some up the other week from b&q total rubbish, might as well as been wood chip used it as a mulch instead

 

I stopped using B&Q/Verve MPC the year I noticed that small plants potted up in it were not extending their roots into it.

 

Yes @Scrungee thats the stuff instead of calling it MPC they should call it mulch,should have known really, picked up some bowers compost from b&m yesterday totally different it had that lovely rich compost smell when I open the bag

 

This year ive really got into my own Compsting, never knew so much of recycling material could be composted. Its so intresting to do, or perhaps ive turned sad lol.Any way, its turning out to be quite nice.

 

After the fiasco several years ago when Wicked EDIT: Wickes (damn auotocorrect has done it again!) changed their compost from a tried and tested quality product to a load of rubbish, I've boycotted them up until this year when I've used their compost in 30L pots for growing spuds.

And I'm not impressed with the result, they're drying out in less than 2 days and need 5L of water per pot at least every other day. Jack's Magic doesn't dry out that fast.

 

Absolutely agree @Scrungee. I got some Wickes stuff and it is very so so to my mind and I doubt much use for seed sowing, I used Jack's Magic which did the job nicely. Wickes's stuff dries out SO much faster than Jack's Magic, what I have been doing is using some Wickes to fill the containers 1/2 way and then filling to the top with Jack's Magic. I reckon if I'd used 100% Wickes to fill my hanging baskets which contain cherry Tomato plants I'd never have been able to water them enough as the baskets hang in the greenhouse and need a fair dose of water daily.
I will be on the look out for Jack's Magic being sold off cheaply at the end of the season and try to get loads. i did this before and got 30x30ltr bags for a very reasonable price . The results from using year old stuff have been absolutely fine for seed sowing.

 

Anyone tried this from makro? Wasn't opening a bag in-store.. I hate picking one up with a hole and it spills all over you.

 

Just run out of my MPC of choice , Clover . Bought a bag of Wickes , this appears fine just repotted a couple of plants. What is Wickes MPC like for sowing seeds in ? I have run out of seed compost.

 

I will stick with Canna Terra Professional it is the only one I find consistently good.
Dissapointed this year with levingtons professional

 

further googling its made by durstons, which I have been using up the allotment. Still not opened a bag, though.

@sandymac The other half uses that for his growing, he wants me to try to tomatoes in it next year with the canna A and B for feeding to compare to normal mpc, would be interesting I think.
