Sadly, our government run CBC is exactly the same. Biased and supported through our income tax so everybody pays for their rubbish whether they own a television, radio or whatever. The only fun show on there is the one they purchase through ITV.....Altogether now, Coronation Street :snorky:

The BBC have had a fantastic idea!

They are about to introduce a loggin for iplayer and this will require submission of an email address. Then their cunning plan is to check whether anybody using that email has declined to buy a TV licence on the grounds they don't watch TV.

Idiots! If I have over 200 email adresses, I'm sure anybody without a TV licence might have 2 or more.

BBC iPlayer will require password login for all users within weeks

We don't buy a "licence" for our televisions. We buy the tv then pick which provider- cable/satellite etc that we wish to view and pay that company for the stations we want. We split the signal or pay for extra receivers. But it does not go directly to the government. They collect their share in licencing fees from the providers and also through taxes.

Our CBC and other government supported networks must transmit free of charge through "the air" or have online content available. But they certainly don't have a strong signal. I rarely can pick up "my show" because of rain, wind, sun, whatever the flavour. I land up watching my show on the internet about 60% of the time due to poor reception using the antenna.

We have many televisions and I cannot imagine the expense of paying for a licence for each one. :yikes:

The TV licence here is one per household @CanadianLori - £147 a year or £12.25 a month, but you can have as many receivers as you want for that (unless it is a house that is split into multiple occupation such as student digs etc, then it is different). That TV licence pays for the BBC TV channels, online services as well as the BBC Radio Stations.

Other channels are available free (they earn their revenue by advertisements), and there are pay-tv options via Cable or Satellite

wow @fat controller that is a bargain. We can't get a basic cable package for less than £20 per month. We currently have satellite tv which costs £127 a month. Well, that is the package my oh wanted. We have over 50 movie channels and lots of other stuff. my oh is retired and his hobby is wearing out remotes :heehee: it's true. I just bought another three so I don't have to buy more replacements for at least a year. :rolleyespink:

What is this TV thing that you all speak of? Do I have one in the garden?
Oops, it's part of my iPad that I watch F1 races in the garden on a Sunday afternoon (occasionally).

Wow that is a lot - not sure what you do with 50 movie channels ? I have Virgin cable - broadband @ 80 mbps - cable TV , lots of channels but I only watch at the most 10 - landline telephone . This costs about £55 per month . Plus we have Netflix at £7.50 per month.
Not to sure why we pay for a landline , we tend to use our mobile allowance most of the time.

Blimey!!! At that price I'd rather build a shed in the garden with a window and have a heater and laser microphone and watch the neighbours' TV through binoculars. :snork:

I'm a devout Luddite, and a miser :heehee:, and wouldn't dream of paying that much. :rolleyespink: We pay £26 per month that includes snail broadband and landline with free calls Anytime. The difference between our charges, compared to yours, allows both of us to go out for a really substantial lunch two and a half :snork: times a month. :dbgrtmb:

We do pay for a TV licence but just have Freeview - and rarely watch much. :)

I suppose you have to pay a monthly fee for your mobile. We don't have that modern facility :old: but can get more lunches per month for what people pay for their mobiles :snorky:

In miser mode:- as we do have to pay for calls if we use our landline to phone mobiles we don't phone mobiles  Our landline gets lots of use - over 200 calls per month. People know not to leave a message asking for a call back to their mobile

There's plenty of places round the net to watch whatever TV you want, ex pats have been watching BBC etc for years even before I player came out,

We do have sky but one of my hobbies is satellite tv, mainly feedhunting looking for live broadcast,

There's thousands of channels out there if you have a motorised satellite dish, and its not expensive to set up if you DIY, you can get a used system for less than £50,

This is just one satellite 7E ive scanned FTA only and over 100 channels.

I have taken to watching anything on BBC down the other half's house. Which is only Beech Grove and Gardener's World (Taboo and Line of Duty when it was on.)

I watch f1 on all4, normally after its been on live.

Any other series; Sense 8, Archer, Vikings, Last man on Earth and Walking Dead ..etc on the xbox (couch tuner)

No TV license here, saves me forking out for something that's not used.

A TV Licence is required, no matter what channel you watch if the programme is a live/current transmission
