I have had and used root trainers for about 8 years now (I think), the haxnicks book type that sit in a rack and open up to get your plants out when removed from the rack. They are brilliant and work very well bu one failing is that the plastice they are made from is thin and over time starts to break apart.

I'll get another year out of mine, but I am looking around for a replacement, made of a stronger plastic. We all know that in general there is a thin easily broken plastic and a stronger more durable one used in cell or seed trays etc, I am looking for the stronger more durable type.

I have also seen a different type of root trainer and I wonder if anyone has any of these and where you got them from, and if they are made of the more durable material.

These are the one I have found, similar to cell trays.

I agree the plastics break down easily but I think that is the idea of course. Maybe these people can answer you questions..

I'm not sure they actually want you to use them year after year, they want to sell you some more.

Why not just use toilet roll centres?

Great things to plant in, but the roots will wind round and round and up their own yin yang so when planted out they do not root into the soil as readily.

Compare that to the middle photo above where the roots are trained down instead, these plants are ready to grow away as soon as they are planted so they fare better, much quicker.

I am a stones throw from Scotland here and lose three weeks at the start and end of the season over those "down south", so with 6 weeks less I need every advantage I can gain to get plants in and to maturity.
