Log roll edging

Log roll , I just cut a slot with a spade or turf cutter , then bash it in with a lump hammer . Just edged one of my beds with it two weeks ago . I bought it from Asda , but Poundstretcher have a good price on it as well. I had bamboo edging before , looks very very nice ... but rots quite quickly and is a lovely home for slugs n snails.

 

There's a mail order company called " Coopers of Stortford " who do a heavy duty plastic cobble stone edging in lengths of about 12" which interlock with each other so you can order whatever length you require, each section has its own peg attached to drive into the ground.

 

They are often called log roll pins, available from many diy stores.

I put up some 12" high Wickes log roll but did not use them in the end, finding it easier to first put in some small wooden posts at about 3ft spacing and then screw the log roll to them.

It covered about 4 mtrs but was following a driveway, so it needed to be in a straight line , rather than following a flowing boarder, so I put 2 horizontal lengths of treated roofing battens on the inside of the logs to help keep them straight.

 

I've used it in my previous garden and in this one.

Not quite sure why you think it needs a metal stake (?) but, from experience, I would recommend a stake! What distance? Well, at the very least it would need one at each end/interlock. Whether it needs one in-between that as well would very much depend on the weight it is expected to take. So, the taller the log roll the greater the need for some in-between "staking".

One thing to bear in mind - it's a little niggle, but worthy of a mention - grass has a habit of filling even the narrowest, teeniest "void": such is the case with log roll edging; they get into those thinnest of crevices between each "log" Not a major issue, nor insurmountable, just something to be aware of. On the opposite side of that same coin, what you grow in the border behind the log roll also has a tendency to squeeze into the teeny gap too.

I like it: functional, sympathetic to it's cause; easy to install; can take a "hit" from a strimmer without falling apart; not as *harsh* as some alternatives (thinking brick here) and, if you think ahead prior to installing, you can paint it a colour which may please you (an aspect often overlooked in the haste to installing it)! Worth thinking about ahead of time because, even though it is harder wearing than HarryS's bamboo, it is an untreated product, a natural product and therefore victim to the elements.

Wilko sell the log roll edging (without any stakes) in 1.8m lengths. 15cm high edging is £3.50, 22.5cm high is £6. bargain?
