By the sound of it one or two bumble bees have taken up residence inside a hollow breeze block (the cavity is exposed and is at the top of the structure at the corner of a shed). There's been a buzzing sound from inside the block all day.

Because of where it is and also due to the fact that a wooden beam is partly over the top of the block I can't of course look inside.

I'd like to just squirt in some expanding foam but I don't want to kill the bee(s!). So how can I tempt it/them out before squirting in the foam? Perhaps wave some honey around and make assorted buzzing sounds? ;)

Note: I'm assuming that it/they are bumble bees as it's the sort of place where they like to take up residence.

Have a close look as wasps also like to nest in places like that too.. we have had a couple of wasps nest like that over the years in our shed, usually they are gone by winter though. The last time we had them after they left we plugged the gaps with that foam.. Although they came looking last year they were not able to get in..

Thanks very much. So whether they are wasps or bees is there a way to entice them out before applying the foam? I really don't want to kill them (well, if they're wasps I'm not hugely worried ..... ). I'm sure they won't be honey bees.

Probably not ... could you not delay applying your foam until the Autumn?

The problem is that I want to start to seal the gap due to water ingress in the wrong places.

Please don't block up the hole if they are honey bees or bumble bees, they will soon move on....I totally understand that you want to get on but a few weeks won't hurt :dbgrtmb:. If you contact your local pest control man he will be able to put you in contact with your local 'bee' club, maybe they might need a swarm for someone's hive if they are infact honey bees :dbgrtmb:

You could try spraying lavender oil around the entrance as that does deter them as so concentrated or try smoking them out if you can find a way to do that. why not contact your local Bee keeprs association they may not come out to you but usually do just to check whether bees or wasps and they can advise you if nothing else. Google local beekeeping society for your area and they will pop up Good Luck.

Don't worry, I have no intention of blocking up the hole when any bees are in there, I'm not cruel, I like bees and they are badly needed. :)

No buzzing so far today so maybe the bee has moved off, I'm still convinced that it was a bumble bee and I'm pretty sure that there was only one or maybe two in there.

No problem, and thanks for the link. I'll have a read. :)

Still no buzzing so far today.
