Potted the main plant on today, still keeping in a tub for over-wintering. The 5 smaller bubils from seed are in front:
I saw one for sale at RHS Wisley yesterday - it had already flowered so it would be a waste of money - couldn't see a price on it. As it was in a small pot the flower spike was only about 6ft. So I reckon mine will need to go in the ground to make a decent root system.
Leave it out until about the end of december usually, then it goes in the garage for 3 to 4 months. it's pretty heavy so one year it will have to take it's chances.
Ok.............. so the Beschorneria yuccoides that I've grown from seed clearly isn't................ Having assumed that it was Beschorneria this has been outdoors for the last few winters!
@longk - yes, it does look like a beschornia... I've got one I grew from seed too. Still waiting for flowers. I've got a billbergia and a puya I leave outside too. Optimism is eternal!
Billbergia just about survives outdoors here. Puya mirabilis croaked, P.coerulea var violacea did survive although it took a bit of a kicking but I've yet to try P.berteroniana outdoors.
There are plenty of bulbils which are close to harvesting. If anyone wants any pm me................ Unknown Furcraea by longk48, on Flickr
Have just planted mine outdoors permanently, it had got to the stage of being too heavy for me to drag around in it's pot:
I dragged mine outside about a week ago, it spent the winter in the garage, after the first day the outer leaves all flopped, just leaving the central spike erect. Got a bit excited that it might be a sign of flowering, but now not so sure. We will see.
