I had a feeling that would be the case pal.
He seemed to be immersed in all things green and growing when he setup in your neck of the woods. Now business is booming and he has staff, I imagine the hunger isn't the same or the original direction he had may have swerved off course

I think money was the driving force from the start, not that he needed to live off the land like us peasants do :heehee:

River Cottage is now a thriving business, fair play to him though, and the series were interesting :)

Spot on! I could never knock the fella for his achievements, he seems a fairly decent bloke from what I've seen on the old tele box! He definitely opened quite a few folks eyes to the whole grow your own style of life.
Although not before Tom & Barbara ay lol

            Quite right Tinker

Wish I could get away with charging £260 for a 3 hour fishing trip :phew:

I've been collecting and eating wild foods since the 70's, so I guess there's a bit of jealousy on my part, but like you say, he's educated a lot of folk :spinning:

What do you do with spare plants that you had no plans for?

Have a go at growing them upside down, of course.

I'm having to keep a check on the Green House more than I normally do as some of my Tomato plants have 11 to 16 fully developed fruits on the trusses and the weight of them is causing the plant to collapse. I've rewired more supports but even that is not as good as I would like. I might have to think of a way to use a net, or the like, to support the trusses and take the strain of the actual plant stems. The Mod 1 variety [small, sweet, plum shaped] have been ripening for the last 3 weeks but the other 4 varieties are still green.:wallbanging:

Mine are so far behind, it is disappointing - only just blooming in many cases. I have a feeling I am not going to see much in the way of tomatoes this year.

I'd be the same mate. We're not talking a few years either, you have decades of experience in comparison, but I suppose it's a question of drive and direction.

I imagine you make a point of filling your own stomach and a handful of friends, with your growing efforts, whereas from the off, HFW seems to have had a bit of a long game in mind, moving from the big smoke, renting the initial smaller cottage, then taking on a few more acres before upping sticks to the newer HQ, where he rents out the space for functions/weddings, has the cooking school, and the eatery place in Axminster as well.

I think we all have it in us IF that was the path we wanted from growing.
For me, I think about his phone and email being none stop, and the fact that he kicked off like me and you, and is now a fully fledged businessman with staff who do all the actual fun stuff out in the yard.
I dunno about you Zigs, although I have an idea I think, but I don't grow for that reason mate. It'd definitely soon wear out the shine ay!

Second tunnel, tomatoes planted in borders around 8th June, the beefsteaks at the back have had all their growing points removed

Big toms now shrouded, don't think update pics of them will be very revealing from now on

Mine are still green and hard, no rot on them, but they need to swell up a bit ...
