Having abandoned my ten to twelve year (past it) Dyson just before I moved I bought a fairly cheap Hoover as a stop gap and ten months on I'm about to bin it. What a load of rubbish!

With Hoovers and Vax's both as bad as each other I went shopping for another Dyson. Owing to health problems it had to be an upright and the choice was great....so I thought. The only place to buy here is Curry's and I don't think much of them either, so off I went to see what they had with the intention of buying online should I spot what I wanted.

All Dyson upright cleaners are now rollerballs with the exception of the re-chargeable type. First hurdle! I can't use rollerballs because they have a swivel base and they make my hands and wrists ache when pushing them around. I move on to the new re-chargable's.....the same issue with the swivelling base and the added weight of it's motor etc. at the top of the handle.

All I wanted was a straight forward upright cleaner and unless I bought cheap which usually turns out to be nasty as well, there wasn't one available by any decent manufacturer. Manufacturers now seem to think we all want the same thing and don't give a toss that some of us need to buy for a particular handling reason. :doh:Having exhausted the poor shop assistant, who I hasten to add was very helpful I abandoned the shop to think.....where am I going to get what I need?

Home to the internet and another search. Starting with Amazon I came across a possibility and checked out the company selling what I though was a cleaner with a fixed body. I don't want or need something that is pretty. I don't need something with multiple bits and pieces attached, just a cleaner that will function properly with the least hassle.

I think I've found it.....it's German thank goodness, if it had been Chinese, no comment!:biggrin:

There's a brief video on the site if anyone is interested.

    SEBO AUTOMATIC X1.1 ECO

Yes, it's back to the old fashioned bags but that's not a problem for me. Apart from a basic computer on board it's straight forward and also has a five year guarantee. No heavier than the Dysons and is quieter. If my now departed 17 year old Miele washing machine is anything to go on the Germans may well have got it right again with this machine.

It's being delivered this coming week via Amazon with free postage. I'll be back in a couple of weeks to give you a report and points out of ten! :)

Sebo - German for built like a brick dunny, by the time the five year guarantee has expired it will be just about run in; tough, but reliable, and the bags are easy to get from Amazon. If I wasn't a Dyson owner, it would be one of these or a Miele.

Your vote of confidence is very welcome FC, as I hadn't heard of Sebo until I started the search. :)

PS - Hoover and Vax are the same company. Hoover completely lost the plot in the 80's and have never recovered. I was less than impressed when I took my Vax carpet shampoo machine apart - utter garbage. In contrast, I stripped our Bissell last week to its component parts, thoroughly cleaned it and rebuilt it, and it is as every bit as good as the day it left the factory.

They have been around for donkeys years - at least forty I reckon. They started out doing commercial machines - used by hotels and the like, and were the go to machine before everyone went cheap and went for Henry cylinders. I think they ventured into the domestic market in the early 90's, but never had a big presence here in the UK - they are better known in the US.

I can't say I have ever had one apart to see the internals, but that is mostly because they are not known for needing to see a screwdriver. I look forward to your opinion on your new one.

That makes sense, I've binned two Vax's in the past too and on your recommendation bought a good Bissell for shampooing with no complaints. :)

What exactly do you do with your vacuum cleaners??
I've got a 5 yr old hoover and it has never been a problem, mind you I dont spend my weekends taking it apart and trying to put it back together again.

                Perhaps that is where I'm going wrong??:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

You have been lucky there then. In fairness to our Bissell, I could have gotten away with just cleaning the water jets - but, it has served us well for a good few years now, and I decided it deserved a full service; old school training I suppose - the guy who taught me, taught me well, and the way of things then was to look at the unit as a whole whether it was a TV, VCR or a vacuum cleaner. If you are going to look at something to resolve a problem, give it a good going over to head off any future problems - I now know that the Bissell has completely clean waterways, filters and jets, all seals are clean, inspected and checked for leaks, belts are checked for wear and perishing, and beater bars are clean and lubricated. I will get 10-15 years out of that machine (at least) by treating it like this.

Pete I've not taken my Hoover apart....it's falling apart!:snorky:

If you look after appliances (which I do) it extends their life, but we all know if you buy something cheap it's not going to last long. My Hoover hasn't made it out of guarantee and I'm not going to bother taking it back to the shop where I bought it because of the hassle I will be given.

I'm glad you mentioned the Vax cleaner, I've had one, replaced twice under warranty and gave up the third time.
I've a Sebo Felix and it's been a good so far and I've an old Neato robotic cleaner and it's still going but needs new batts but seeing it do the cleaning while I sit back and enjoy a coffee is fun.

Mine hasn't got any water jets, it just hoovers up dust and dirt.

@Sheal, did you buy the cheapest Hoover you could find?

I've been told the local tip is mostly full of very expensive Dysons, exaggerating slightly I guess, but not found anyone over impressed with them, and they cost.

I can't fault Dyson @pete - we are on number four now (I killed the first by using it to suck up rubble and plaster, and Little C killed number two by using it as a climbing frame - number three passed away recently [I could have fixed it in all fairness, but I couldn't be bothered as it was nearly ten years old], and the new one is much lighter which Mrs C loves). I have always had good customer service on the rare occasion I have had to contact them too, and have experience of their hand dryers in a high use industrial location - again, years of trouble free service.

Hoover/Vax had the knowledge to build decent stuff, but chose to go down the path of making everything to a price (as many other manufacturers have done), and now are now worth a light.

Nah, that is four in over twenty years, so not that bad - and the 'non abused' one lasted over a decade (in fact, it is in the greenhouse at the moment as I have bodged it together enough that it will suck up leaves and compost!) - now, how many greenhouses do you know that have their very own dedicated vacuum cleaner?

For me its Miele everytime. Tried Dyson but hated it. Was noisy and forever falling over and heavy to lug around.
