You can easily overwinter them another year but do you really want so many to look after indoors? They do tend to be a focus point for whitefly.

You can pick any chillies at any stage of redness. If you freeze them they will be a bit mushy when unfrozen. Otherwise you can dry them. We don't bother with using any form of drying equipment but place the darker red chillies on kitchen paper (single layer of them) and place on a sunny windowsill. Turn them twice a week and through out any that may start going off. After a few weeks they should be nice and dry and solid. Then store them in a jar. They will keep in good condition for a few years.

Great @shiney, I'm off to pick some and will try your method. The excess I froze last year and they were not as nice as fresh but still very good. I found out about the whitefly last winter:yikes: after the 3 plants I had indoors got attacked. Only 1 of the 3 plants seemed pretty healthy by the spring so I binned 2 and kept 1 and that's the one which is smothered with ripe chillies now. What I'll attempt to do is try and keep that plant going another year and hopefully overwinter 3 of your young plants. I have a huge south facing bathroom with a massive window (yes the bathroom is upstairs so no peeping toms!). The windowcill is very deep so it's an ideal spot for overwintering. It should accommodate 4 Chilli plants without too much bother plus a few other bit and pieces i try to keep going.
By the way how the hell do whitefly know when you all of a sudden bring plants into a bathroom?:wallbanging:. Never seen any before and then within a few days it seemed my plants had attracted a flaming army if the b..gers.

@silu It's one of the mysteries of life! :noidea: :)

The bath room is a good place to keep them as you can more easily wash off the whitefly.

Yup the plants I had last winter were turned upside down and dunked in the bath a few times. Not sure if they liked the Radox that was in the bath water but they survived. Hey come to think of it after a couple of dozes of Radox bath water the white fly disappeared :ideaIPB: maybe I have found the answer to the blighters.....there again maybe not!
@"M" Thanks for posting the picture of the shiney chilli. I was a little worried as to why some of mine had a purple hue about them but see yours do too. Mine are about a couple of weeks behind yours colour wise but definitely getting there now:dancy:

Yes, they go from a pale green/yellow colour to mottled purple, then an orangey colour and then, as the summer gets hotter and I take more clothes off, it moves from blushing to downright deep red with shame at my behaviour :heehee:

:waggy: Mitts off greedy guts :heehee: ... they are ear marked for a home made chilli con carne later this week ;)

                  Very exciting times here!

                  IMG_3762.JPG

One of them has nearly turned completely red and another is on the way to it! (the red bit outside at the bottom is a geranium and is always red!!)

They're also not as hard-feeling as before and have gone some kinds of scuffy marks on the top! I may well try and use one in the next couple of days and see how they are. Can't quite believe I have grown these from a tiny seed to a happy plant about to provide me chillies! :spinning::spinning:

@bexy13 I sell some on Open Day (we open our garden for one and a half days at the end of May and had over 500 people turn up - including a load of GC members ) but some people pop in during the summer to buy them (waiting for us to bring them on quicker than they can). Those are usually the Shiney Hybrids.

The Nagas are almost exclusively for the people owning and working in the Indian takeaways and restaurants around here (none of them are actually Indians but are Bangladeshis).

All the money we raise on Open Day, and subsequently, goes to a local charity for mentally handicapped children. We've raised well over £5,000 this year :dbgrtmb:

Sorry, we don't go to Harrogate :noidea:

Four more Hybrids sold this week. :)

@bexy13 , there are a few Chilli growers I could put you in contact with, who send out live plants, but this is usually at the beginning of the growing season.

@Joy Michaud is worth contacting for one
