No idea where to put this, but it is rather amusing, at the moment. In the field opposite us there is a stray flock of sheep. The field is not stock proof (no gate and a huge missing section of hedge). I have just chased the flock off the road, out of neighbours garden and back on to the field. No idea who owns the sheep or farms the field. So the question is, who do we inform? There could be a nasty accident if the animals go along the lane and out on to the main road.

Police, it's offence for straying animals on the highway, Defra will know who owns them from the ear tag number or a vet may have to scan them for the id chip
or neighbour farmers may now who they belong to

You also can clam for damage so take pic's and get pic of ear tags etc if they are getting into your land and owner don't pay for damage (i think you can clam sheep and sell for damage, they have to be getting on to your land alot, but not sure)

You may find the owner through your local Council animal movement service

They have settled down in the field for the night. The sheep that is, not the police.
Just wondering how long it will take for someone to realise that they are short of 20 or so sheep.

Is there no way you can fence them in for the night? We used to have this problem years ago with stray sheep and cattle.

It shouldn't be long as the farmer should be checking them once or twice aday, but it can be once a week with some farmers :mute: or some just look over the gate :mute: or he/she is still looking for them but in the other direction:biggrin:

You could ring some local farmers and put the word out that there are lose animals about, that should get around to who's they are

There are few 'local' farmers round here. Almost all of the land is rented out to 'distant' users. They then send in contractors to work the land. We have no idea who is actually working the land round about us. The one farmer we do know says that the sheep are not his, nor are they from the next farm along as he has already asked about.

That's the trouble with Satellite farmers

                Free lamb chops then :Wino:

There is a phone number here for registering sheep, they may help, but you will need the 2 numbers on the ear tags, 1 is the animal number and the 2nd is the holding number which will end with UK (farm where the animal was born) if the info is up to date they may tell you who owns them

Just been thinking, it may not be a farmer as such it may be someone that has sheep but no land of their own so rent land where they can which can be anywhere, but they still should have a holding number/registered

Have you found the owners of the sheep yet?

Sorry, meant to come back and report. We were away from home for the day and when we returned the animals were gone and the field was being sprayed by a contractor. We have to assume that someone came and removed the sheep before the tractor went in.
