WHAT JOBS ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2017

Finished all pets/ hedgehogs about half hour ago. Sat in bed again with coffee and D

I am thinking about which jobs I am going to be doing today .

 

Now my guests have gone home I can concentrate on getting to grips with all the jobs that need doing in my garden.

My outspoken friend said she disliked yellow flowers in the garden. This time of year I have heleniums, rudbeckias and dahlias in my borders which she said I should eradicate. I tend to agree because they do tend to dominate.

I may start a hot bed and segregate those offending flowers to further down the garden so we can't see them from the house. My sunflowers and marigolds are right at the bottom of my garden in my cutting bed so the yellow fellas may make better bedmates.

Why is a garden always "work in progress"?

 

Ha ha alana......a friend of mine said the same thing to me last year...the self same trio.....she "hates yellow flowers". Then she asked for pieces of heleniums, rudbeckias and a (pale yellow) Clare de Lune dahlia.
I disagree......I have lots of yellows right now; heleniums, yellow flowered cannas, dahlias, rudbeckias, echinaceas, dwarf and tall kniphofias, yellow osteospermums, yellow agastaches, anthemis Mrs. Buxton, etc. etc. However purples, blues, reds, oranges, whites too.......this is the time of year for flamboyance Alana. Get rid and I think you will have your outspoken friend say she hates red flowers next year.
I have been deadheading some of my heleniums.....they flower so prolifically. wouldnt be without them. One large clump with a group of blue salvia uliginosa, another with salvia Amistad, another with purple foliage acteas, with purple lobelias and so on.
What would you replace them with?

 

I haven't really given much thought to replacements yet but I love all shades of blue, purple, pinks and white so I'll stick to a more subtle colour palette in the borders near the house.

I love phlox for the scent and salvias and lobelias for their shape so maybe a few of each. I've cut several of my evergreen shrubs into lollipop shapes which gives good height so low growers would be preferable. I'll do some research and get started this weekend.

I won't get rid of the yellows because they do so well here - it's just a move not a total eradication.

 

Cut the grass front and back before tomorrow's rain.

 

Spent an hour or so working on the mini project in front garden .... actually not sure what to call it as not strictly a flower bed and neither a rockery but does contain both. I would post a pic but kindle says low memory again even though I've cleared the cache. I hate technology .

Whilst in front garden I noticed that the remains of the last bonfire now has Nasturtiums growing in it

Rain right now but supposed to clear by mid morning heralding a period of high pressure The rain has given the garden a fresh, clean shiny look
Busy today on other things incl measuring up for flooring, carpets etc for new build home. Next step is hand in pocket time to pay for them!

 

I didn't do any gardening yesterday. The day was split between work and carrying bricks. I currently have this many:



That is the result of 4 car journeys. I am carefull how many I collect each time as

a) I don't know how much weight my car can take
b) I'm not physically strong and I have to watch my back and my heart
c) The time it takes. I need my car road ready at all times.

The pile at the other end is slowly getting smaller. It currently looks like this:
