Just a follow on question about cuttings, while bottom heat is often needed later in the season and normally provide shading against any direct sun; wondered if any of the red and/or blue led lighting would be beneficial in any way in the early stages of rooting ?

 

Hi Ricky,

I've never used any form of bottom heat or artificial lighting when rooting Fuchsia cuttings.

I've always used the system that most professional growers use and that is by taking two lots of cuttings, the first around the end of September ( mainly as insurance plants and to use as stock plants ) and then the second starting 21st December week ( these are the ones that will be grown on for flowering )
You'll find that the ones taken after the 21st will root and grow away quickly with the minimum of fuss as they grow with the lengthening daylight hours.

Had just been taking my 'insurance' cuttings but seems a little early, though should be bigger plants next spring.

I like the Red Spider @KFF . Is it hardy? Looks a lot like Display which I have.

 

Hi Longk,
It's similar colouring to Display but the sepals are longer and twist around .

As for hardiness , it's classed as a half-hardy rather than tender. It's hardy for me but i think you'd be pushing it a bit where you are.
You could always try putting a mound of compost etc over it.

Ok. I'll stick with Display which is actually one of the better doers that I have.

 

Hi all.

Appreciate any advice on how to handle this outbreak of rust (?) on this tender standard.

Its been outside all summer and just brought it into the greenhouse last week as we were getting some colder nights.

It literally became covered in this rust withing the last day or two , its a lot more dusty with the rust on top of the leaves than the picture shows.

Have moved it back outside as hopefully its not infected my other fuchsias !

Can it be treated or is it one for the dustbin ?

Had rust on the leeks many years ago and know that type of rust can be persistent in the soil for many years.

@ARMANDII, I've got 3 Fuchsia shrub plants all put together in the front garden so they show in a thick bunch...beautiful plants
