@redstar thank you for posting this information - im always reluctant to give up ground space for shrubs to grow as i grow lots of wildflowers and annuals for pollinators. Knowing that so many shrubs are very pollinator and bird-friendly, i have a few shrubs that i have treated the same way but not a hydrangea. I have an Aunt Annabel so try to grow Annabel plants whenever i can and that Annabel is beautiful and now with your advice, i can grow one the same as a small tree so :ThankYou: again :)

IMG_1146.JPG IMG_1147.JPG IMG_1148.JPG IMG_1149.JPG Have been spending some time out in the back garden cutting down the evening primrose plants that have flowered all summer and I don't mind a little bit of self sowing done but I don't want too many.

Mr Kandy has been out in the front garden cutting back my white butterfly bush as it has grown quiet tall:biggrin:

This morning we dug up 1 1/2 rows of carrots. They were Amsterdam Forcing and Autumn King and also some Early Nantes. No carrot root fly at all because we covered them with insect mesh but a few were split due to hot weather followed by rain while we were on our walkabouts and the small keel slugs were starting to have a nibble so they just had to come up.

Its the flowering Redstar that interests me.....i.e. How training and pruning affects this. Heavy flowers so maybe a picture next year?? :)

Got several Hydrangeas here that were inherited with house. I do like Hydrangeas, such pretty colours, but not really much use for wildlife. I've considered getting rid of them but haven't quite had the heart to do so yet. They were all very neglected when I moved in so have spent some time pruning and feeding over past few years and they have all recovered.

Nothing done in garden yesterday as :rain: :rain: and then when it changed to :sunny: I was out and about doing other things. Today is going to be more :rain::rain: so doubt there will be much happening today. Very behind on everything gardening related, feeling the edges of panic starting to creep in, so much to do:rolleyespink:

Likewise. I'm way behind on where I wanted to be. On the plus side (if you look at it like that) I have achieved 2 jobs I either a) had no intention of doing or b) was going to keep for another time. My main job I can't even start until my neighbour replaces the fence. I have no idea when that is due to happen.

Today is a lovely day. I have no jobs booked in today so I am getting stuck in the best I can. In between cups of coffee that is. :blue thumb:

The weather girl keeps saying the rain will clear later......what rain??? it is reasonably sunny and feeling very warm! :)
I don't think I will get around to any work in the garden but I am keen to get out there. At last salvia leucanthemums are producing their flowers.....month or so late this year. Few salvias are as eye catching. :) Will post pictures later in the week
Many summer divided perennials and potted up have made large plants occupying 5 litre pots.
Monty has been experimenting with this on GW this summer but this is something I have always done...prob most of you folks too :)
                    Enjoy your Sunday everyone

That's job done I think. The slabs are laid. The bed is free(ish) from roots and weeds. I have topped up the soil and mixed it in with a bag full of fresh manure. I then covered the whole thing with bark chippings. It will now be possible to walk from the house to the chest freezer in the top shed without getting wet feet. :dbgrtmb:

Later, when everything has settled down, I intend to take out about a foot of lawn to create a spring bulb bed all the way around.

                      :snorky:

                      G.

PS As predicted the dogs took a great interest in the horse manure.

A quick question while the thought is in my head. I would like to fill the cracks in the slabs with something. I previously mentioned my wife was given a packet of forget me not seeds at a funeral she attended recently. Would that grew in the cracks? If so, would I be able to propegate the seeds in my greenhouse (assuming I get one) and have ready made plants to put out? The instructions say to sow directly in the ground but whatever I do I don't want to waste them.

                            G.
