Today's pickings (they're riper than they appear, just look lighter because of sunlight streaming through my garage doors when taking a pic using phone).

Looks like it's going to be one of those rare years when every single tomato ripens before frost gets into the polytunnels. In a couple of weeks max they'll all have ripened, right up into and along the apex.

Once again I've not picked and brought back Sungolds, I just snack on them in the tunnels rather than risk them all splitting on the way back, besides, they taste much better eaten like that.

I as everyone have the sungold splitting problem, I have tried numerous varieties which supposedly rival sungold for flavour and they never quite come up to the mark, orange parouche were the nearest. I think I will try some sun cherry next year they seem to get good reviews from various forums and not just seed sellers blurb.
has anyone here tried sun cherry and if so what are your thoughts.

I tried it for the first time this year Sandy and really like it. It was much better than Sungold in terms of taste, earliness to ripen and yield for me. I will definitely be growing it again next year. It's similar sized but much firmer than Sungold.

          Tomato Taste Test 2017
          Suncherry: Taste 9 : Earliness 10 : Yield 9 : BRIX 9.0 Firm, Sweet and Tangy
          Sungold: Taste 7 : Earliness 5 : Yield 5 : BRIX 9.0 Soft and lots of splits

                  Pickings today:
                  WP_20171014_16_04_31_Rich.jpg

I had to remove all but one plant as they had mostly succumbed to grey mould. The last remaining Black Cherry plant might keep me going for another week or two.

Does anybody know if my physalis / tomatillo should ripen indoors with or without the calyx?
Had them indoors for three days under a lamp and by now the green calyx has dried up more or less..anyone?

Never grown tomatillo Magus but if it is similar to getting a tomato to ripen then it's heat not light you need. Try gentle heat of around 23C. Also ethylene helps, put a ripe banana (which gives off ethylene) amongst green tomatoes to hasten ripening.

Mine are still going.....just. The Sungold have been fantastic but like I have been reading in the posts, skin splitting especially over the last month or so has been annoying. I can't see how it is caused by irregular watering which is the usual culprit, maybe it's because with the weather being colder the skins are more brittle. Sounds from what others have said that Sun Cherry is a really worthwhile variety to grow. Think I'll give them a try next season but will still keep growing Sungold, they do really well in my greenhouse and all the family love them. Not so sure I'll grow Garden Pearl again. Good for in hanging baskets to use up all available space in the greenhouse but they do go a bit mildewy indoors (think they are really meant for outside growing) and trying to keep the watering going in the baskets in the greenhouse is a bit of a chore. All my other Tomatoes I grow in the soil beds which means unless it is very very warm I don't need to water every day:yes:.
