I planted these alliums (Summer Drummers) at the end of October and they are already shooting up like it's spring time? I'm surprised that they have so much growth on them.

Should I be worried - will these plants be damaged over winter?

    Many thanks
    Fin

just put in 25 alliums, and its a 8 inch depth they like. the big purple ball type. then I had a smaller type, and did only about 6 inch on that one. my tall ones the bulb was large, about 3 fingers across .

try, instead of up lifting now. just pile in some mulch around it, about 2 inches.

While I don’t know this particular variety, I wouldn’t worry. Several varieties I have are showing this stage of growth now; quite normal.

Hi @GardeningFin I am afraid I know no more than you do. I have never grown bulbs before either so I too am anxious to see how they turn out. I have planted lots of different bulbs in lots of different locations. I have only a rough idea of what went where. It is very unlikely that any of them were planted at the recommended depth or spacing. As a bit of security I did increase my top soil and mulch afterwards. There is nothing more to do but wait and see what happens in the spring.

So, can I remind you all again. I have on my 3 acre property, in numerous of gardens a ruff total of over 100,000 bulbs. Just put in some more this fall. Yep. I also lift in the spring to split, because after 10+ years, they need splitting, its a rotation thing, each spring we do an area, and broaden it to other areas. Some bulbs are in the open lawn, the early blue one, the crocus and others, that come up before grass needs mowing. I can go on.

@GardeningFin looked up the one you planted, looks pretty.

I put three kinds of Alliums in, just a week ago and they are Allium Firmament, Allium Gladiator, and Allium Rosenbachianum. Also in another area put in 100 Fritillaria Meleagris. And yet another area put in Lily Muscadet and Lily Stargazer (the later noticed this year I needed more) All of them were 5 bulbs each.

I get my bulbs from Van Engelen, Inc. mail order. seems they have a wonderful selection.

I have another gathering of an Allium in section that has been there for years, seems to continue to make babies as it getting wider in that area, don't recall the name, but it looks like a cascading firework and its pink, stands nicely and asserts itself in front of the hydrangea shrub near it, so I am pleased with it.

Looking forward to my new ones next year.

GardeningFin, just relax. They will be fine :)

Mulch if you want to....not right up to the stems though....but I would let them be. After flowering, and it will prob be in the spring even though they growing well right now, I would dig them up then and replant a few inches deeper.
In future though planting deeper is best.....if in doubt go even deeper :rasp:

I have daffodils here ready to flower on foliage 40 cm high........everything seems way ahead right now, although I am sure I have been saying this for the past couple of years.:)

Redstar, 3 acres ! Would love to have that :)

When it's the best time to plant spring flowering bulbs? (allium, tulips, hyacinth, daffodils, snowdrops etc.). It's recommended on packages from Aug-Oct. Is it too early yet and they will sprout? (Hampshire) Can't wait :) So far I have muscari and Spanish bluebells inherited from the previous owners.
