Because we live in a world full of ar5eholes that want to create havoc by using viruses or trying to exploit computer code to access our machines and use them for criminal purposes.

Oh, and there is money to be made from selling software to protect you from those, or to resolve their damage.

I often leave mine to update overnight when I go to bed. Unfortunately when the pc goes into sleep mode the update stops. It doesn't start again until I check it the next morning. Its very frustrating. Having taken forever to shut down, the next time you power up it has to configure the updates before you can do anything.

It is frustrating, but sadly it is necessary to make sure that there are no vulnerabilities in your software that someone could exploit. I write bespoke database apps as part of my job, and it can be remarkably frustrating at times - one comma out of place, and it will throw a wobbler; but, it is also hugely rewarding when I see a new user sit down and click away and use the app without ever referring to a manual. It will quite often take four or five failures before I get the code just right - - if you think it is frustrating for a user, then think how much more so for a programmer.

And don't forget just how much we can do with technology nowadays; we have come a hell of a long way since the Spectrum 48k!

Yep, you know me, slightly sceptical about who is actually doing all this.;)

Just think we should look at who has the most to gain, the likes of all those security downloads from the mountains of people offering PC security.
            Far too many to mention.
You get the free version and it then spends the next 10 yrs convincing you you need to pay for the proper version that might actually work, as obviously the free one doesn't.

Then you try to use two different ones and they conflict with one another.
Would have been a joke if you were told you would be doing this 30 yrs ago.

Not everyone involved with electronics, computers and technology is a cowboy I assure you - sadly, those of us that do genuinely care about other people's equipment are often let down by those who are less scrupulous.

NEVER mix anti-virus programmes - they will fight each other like hell, and your PC will be unusable. AVOID McAfee and Norton like the plague - they are resource hogs, and not worth their subscription money. The ONLY paid anti-virus worth a light in my book is ESET - I have used them on all my gear for many years without an issue, and their pricing is very fair. In terms of free stuff, AVG or Avast is about as good as you can get - - yes, they will try and encourage you to give them some money for a paid version, but you can simply ignore that. In fairness to them, they spend a lot of time and money keeping up with those who are hell bent on causing problems, so it is not unreasonable that they try and sell you something once in a while.

Keeping all your software updated is highly advisable, despite it sometimes taking a while - it will significantly reduce the chance of problems in the future, and saves building problems up.

And if you do have a problem - ask someone who can help.

For the record (and I have said it before) - I am happy to be contacted by any GC member who has a problem, and I will do my utmost to help, free of charge. I can help remotely by connecting to your PC whilst you watch what I am doing, or if it is a hardware problem the machine can be sent to me for repair which will always be done at the lowest possible cost, with no labour charge. If you choose to give me a 'drink' for the repair, then that is up to you and greatly appreciated - - but it is not necessary. There are some of us engineers who still give a monkeys.....

It's all the new features that I won't be using FC. I accept that in amongst these updates improvements are being made to security etc., that goes without saying. :) I'm quite happy with W10 on the whole. The problem is not being very computer savvy it's like looking for a needle in a haystack when I'm trying to work out how to set up things that have been undone. This is the second or third time these particular settings have been altered and unfortunately an old brain like mine doesn't retain things like it used too. Thank goodness I by-passed Windows 8!

I actually bought my present lap top just before the release of Windows 10, so at that time is was geared to Windows 8. I asked the chap that was setting it up for me to load Windows 7 which he did, then later I changed to W10 about halfway through the free offer time. On the whole it has worked better for me than W7. :)

Thanks again, I'll only call on your time if I'm particularly stuck. I know how busy you are.

I don't think it's that they're user unfriendly, pete, but they're not intelligent but users expect them to be. Windows 10 has a "history" with me as when Microsoft were pushing W10 for free I "upgraded" my Desktop [running W7] and my newly bought Laptop [running W8] to W10. Both froze during down loading W10 and I had to have both reloaded with their previous OS which cost money. So I still run my Desktop on W7 and another new Laptop which does run W10 but, for me, isn't the best laid out or intuitive system. For me W7 is/was the best system, easy to use and very stable, W10 has a long way to go to get the confidence of the normal user.:dunno:

I think you are basically saying what I was thinking, unless you are pretty pc savvy it's probably best to stick with what you know, I was on XP for years and then had to move to W8 it took me ages to get things sorted how I like them.
Now, to me W8 seems fine, cant actually see any big problems.

You are saying the same about W7, most of what I have heard about W 7 is that it was rubbish, but if you like it, I cant see why you should have to change?

                            Hi All,

Have just moved to W10 from W8.1 and am looking for some good practical advice on how to 'tame' it to my needs.

I used Classic Shell when W8.1 came out, but think the latest W10 FCU desktop is good enough, think I need to try and keep with the modern ways :old:

Have already changed many of the privacy options to off and added Adblock+ to my browser but seems it could do with something to stop these unwanted videos starting up etc.

One particular question, was always told (xp/w8) to run as a User as it helped protect the System/Admin a/c, though now they say use the Admin a/c as its got UAC protection ?

Might get chance to go though all 25 pages ! of this thread, but wondered if we could have some of your suggestion for a list of "Best Windows 10 Tips" etc to help me and others get things set up better and quicker. :)

                            thanks.
