My thoughts are that shrubs, especially tender ones like bottle brush, cant really be compared to herbaceous perennials.
Not saying they wont flower next year, but any shoots that have soft new growth and flower buds at this time of the year are likely to get the new growth cutback by frost, thus detracting from next springs show.
In a similar way, my Protea has decided to flower now, it's a flower that would have been much better for the plant to have held until next spring when increasing light and warmth would have been much better.

How many winters has that plant spent outside @Gail_68 ?
Do you know what species it is, some are hardier than others.

All Gail can do is, as I said, enjoy how it is now and not worry about what may or may not happen in 6 months' time. A mild winter perhaps? A severe winter could do more than damage flower buds.
An azalea here last autumn flowered and flowered again the following May/June :)
Gail, let us know what happens:)

Hi @longk - I have a cobaea pringlei - it has survived the frost so far but I lost one 3 years ago and the winter wasn't even that bad. I hope my cuttings survive in case we have a nasty winter this time. Still flowering though - here's the last picture I took of it - I can't tell the difference from c. scandens alba...

Pete, I can't tell you what species it is because a friend of ours worked at a nursery and got me two cheaper than the usual price but they've done 7yrs outside and so far coped with heavy snow besides bad frost, so they could be an hardy type.:)

Worth knowing. I was thinking about planting it next to a south facing house wall which is pretty dry all year round.

Salvia 'Amistad' is still blooming its heart out despite a few frosts...............
