    Hi,

Just received our home insurance renewal from LV= and really surprised by the 25% hike over last years premium.

Not as if anything has changed or any claim made and not anywhere near the flood areas.

They normally only go up by a few percent each year. but we always compare, shop around and haggle anyway, but wondered if a 25% rise is a norm this year ?

I wouldn't have thought so, ricky. Sounds like they want out of the Home Insurance Side as they know customers will look elsewhere by giving such a rise in rates.:coffee::snorky:

Gosh @ricky101 that seems a bit steep :yikes:, I'd be giving them a ring & asking some questions, then I'd shop around for a better deal! :dbgrtmb:

Yes, seems strange, we just renewed the motor insurance with them last month, it had hardly gone up in price, but when renewing thought it would be a bit cheeky to haggle, so just joked about having a bit off and without another word the nice young lady did just that and she sounded so happy to oblige, even had a nice little chat after , .....wonder if they are trying clawing it back on the home quote ! :frown:

Nope, ricky, LV is, like many companies, sub-divided into different sub-companies who aren't connected policy or agenda wise. So one sub-company doesn't have to make up profit for any other sub-company.
You should never accept the first quote on any insurance policy, car or house, even if.......

          .

as, to them, you're just a walking cash machine, so you have to question the first quote. So there's nothing cheeky about trying to get a better, cheaper deal, as they are trying to get the most cash out of you.!
My Car Insurance Company always sends me a written quote for the coming year which is higher than the last. I just go on-llne to their site and fill in all my details and always get a cheaper quote. So then I phone them and explain there's a difference between the written quote and the on-line quote, which has ended up with my car insurance being cheaper every year.:snorky:

I always haggle over the price and my home insurance and our car insurances are now lower than eight years ago.

You will find that insurance in general is increasing because the government has been increasing the IPT (insurance Premium Tax).

It went up from 5% in January 2011 to 6% and then again to 9.5% in November 2015. Then at the end of 2016 it went up to 10% and went up to 12% this summer.

IPT on holiday insurance has remained steady at 20%.

On top of that the companies have been paying out more on car insurances (a lot of it is fraud by the public) and more on house insurance because of the climate change causing more floods etc. Then, of course, they increase their profit if they can get away with it. The only lucky thing for us consumers is that it's a competitive market.

There is no discount for remaining loyal hence I swap every year.

Best to get a few quotes, I use Martin Lewis' website MoneysavingExpert:
Cheap home insurance: find buildings and contents quotes - MSE
for the current advice. Then shop around. Usually I swap each year via Quidco to get extra cash back.

Strangely this year I swapped to LV, it cost me £151, less £15 via the cash back site Quidco. So it cost me £136 for Buildings and Contents.

My previous insurers were British Gas and they wanted £193 for the exact same cover.

@JWK ,yes thanks we do use MSE and get their great weekly newsletter.

Just done a GoCompare and for the same details LV came up £3 cheaper than last years premium, never mind the new inflated quote !

Spoke to LV, no comment about the reason for the 25% increase, but once they saw their price on the Go Compare site they matched it straight away, and yes as always they always ask to sign you up to the automatic renewals, .. you know where they can put that !

Just a bit disappointed that after a good few years with them, they start using these price hike tricks.

Sign of the times..........suppose will just have to haggle every renewal... Virgin Media next !!!

How about home and contents cover for £180 with Aviva...make a claim after a flood (Documented on GC in 2007) and have it rise to £ 1485. Reduced by Adrian Flux to a mere £680.
Hopefully a £3 million defence being built as I write will reduce our premium,,,but how is it that a nieghbour who claimed over 14 times our claim had no increase with the same company???
                  Computer say’s NO.
