RHS Wisley under threat

Indeed, RHS Wisley have stated that some visitors journey's will be increased by 7 miles. From what I can work out from the proposed plan they are going to close access from the A3 to Wisley Lane (and hence Wisley Garden). I can't understand why this should add 7 miles but I can see big issues in everyone coming from the South (i.e. me). We will have to queue through Ripley. I can't imagine the locals would like that either.

So it's a very good point pete, actually I have just got my first free bus pass and am itching to use it.

Just looked on google to get directions using public transport and you are about right, 2hr 49 mins using 3 buses plus a 53 minute walk. I would have time for a quick cup of tea at Wisley before setting off back home.

 

There's no way thousands of punters can queue through Wisley village! Then there's that tiny bridge by the anchor pub which will collapse but only after removing several sides of cars...

 

You're lucky, we have had our bus passes for many years. It's a pity we don't have any busses.

 

Wow that would be bad, coming from the North I suppose that would be the route. All those big convoys of coaches would have trouble at that tiny bridge with the dog leg, I struggle negotiating that in my Mini!

 

The paint on the bollards are testimony to that!

I would expect there to be a new entrance created, accessible from A3 as the surrounding infrastructure just wouldn't be able to accommodate anything else.

 

I wonder if the new visitors entrance (currently under construction) will be in the wrong place !

 

Almost certainly but probably all work out. Somehow.

 

There's a bus stop 3/4 of a mile away that has one bus per week - each way (Saturday) and a mile away there's a bus stop that has two busses a day.

It's not like in the old days when we used to have the 'post bus' (anyone remember them?). They were 12 seater minibuses that the post office used for picking up the mail from post boxes and village post offices and taking it to the sorting office in the town. Anyone could flag down the 'bus' and get a free lift to anywhere en route. With three pick-ups and deliveries per day it was quite a good way to travel.

That was in the days when we could also use the 'milk train'. This was a train that ran from London out into the country and back again to transport milk to and from the processing plants and dairies. They ran very early in the morning 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. out our way and, after a night out in London, we used to get a free lift in the guards' vans. We had to catch the train at Liverpool Street Station as it didn't stop until it got to it's dairy stops. For train buffs:- ours was originally the Great Eastern Railways, became LNER and then Eastern Region.
