I'm pleased to announce that, after requests from Mrs Shiney and myself, the Royal Wedding will be the week before Open Day so that it doesn't clash. :blue thumb:

Now all of you can go to both. :dbgrtmb:  :hapydancsmil:

Heehee, @shiney :) This is excellent news for those who were planning on going to the royal wedding instead of to shineyland!

They would be missing some excellent plant-based brilliance if they did go! I hope you now have room for the royals (of GC!) :)

Well, I'm impressed that they moved the date of the Wedding at your request, Shiney, but obviously the Queen thought the GC Open Day took priority. It's also cheaper to hold the Wedding at Windsor Castle and the food bill will be less as it's the same day as the FA Cup final so most people will be there.:dunno::heehee:

Oh oh... not having any first hand knowledge about how tourism is affected by such things as royal weddings, can someone fill me in on how this impacts finding accommodations? Does this make it pretty near impossible to travel without having booked everything well in advance?

@CanadianLori I'm not sure that it will impact travel too much as it will be held at Windsor Castle (I'm assuming you were referring to the wedding and not Open Day :heehee:).

There is bound to be some public event (we'll no closer to the date) but it shouldn't affect accommodation in London. There may be more tourists coming just because of the publicity but I don't know.

The weekend of Open Day is Bank Holiday weekend so that tends to be busier.

If the wedding had been on that weekend (there were many rumours that it would) then it may have affected the attendance at our event as some people may have stayed indoors to watch all the wedding shenanigans on TV.

I used to be an anti-royalist. All that wealth, because their ancestors robbed and pillaged better than the others. I now take a slightly different view. To me, they’re part of our heritage, take them away and we take away a certain aspect of our identity. There is an argument that says they bring in more (by way of tourism etc) than the cost of provision, I wouldn’t know. I do though think they’re worth preserving.
                  Ramble over :)

Yes, I think they're good for the image of our country. :dbgrtmb:

I've looked at published, assumed, revenue to the country from the royal family (tourism etc.) and it far outstripped the cost to us. That's apart from the revenue from the taxes derived from the royals and the crown estates. :noidea:

We're a constitutional monarchy as opposed to an absolute monarchy. :blue thumb: I remember when we changed it in 1215. :old: The Magna Carta was a really boring read.

They are not bad value , keep the tourists happy and gives the Daily Express something to write about.

Tourism is a major part of our economy, bringing in about 17 billion each year and they calculate that the royal family generates £500 million. I'm all for these royal events being spaced out nicely in order to keep the money coming in  :heehee:. They cost the taxpayer £43 million - not too bad a return on investment for the country.

The Queen is loved/liked and admired by lots of other countries such as America - and she is still the Head of State of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, The Bahamas, Tuvalu and, of course, the United Kingdom.

Australia voted on whether to still have the Queen as head of state and become a republic, and a republic was voted down.

I think that a lot of countries would have changed their minds about things if Charles was going to become king but they all seem to love the younger generation of royals. Weddings and babies by the modern royals are very popular with them.

I'll send them an invitation to Open Day and tell them we won't charge them the £1 entry donation. :snorky:
