@ARMANDII Lovely flower but what I do like is how the actual plants around the lawn are done in sequence of order which shows the beauty of the garden:dbgrtmb:

I'm afraid I don't grow Cannas anymore, Gail, due to the Virus that was infecting very expensive plants at the time. In my Cottage Style overplanted garden symmetry definitely is not King.:heehee:

Had a load of seeds left from when I was growing Cannas to sell for fund raising around 2013. Last year germination was very poor (nil?, I think I tried the damp cotton wool in bag in propagator method), but I didn't chuck them out and still filed the coating and soaked over a 100 seeds before giving them a last chance straight into seed compost in a propagator and .....

I ended up sowing them too thickly thinking only a few might germinate.

I germinated one (yes just one!) a bit before Christmas and have it overwintering on the kitchen windowsill. The rest of the seed from that batch will be sown soon for a new variety to me. No idea what it is as I grabbed the seed off a plant in a communal garden. Red leaves and scarlet flowers

I plant up my Canna rhizomes mid March and keep them in the house until they show. Move them out to the GH late April.
I left a couple of Cannas in the ground last year . Covered with a 2" mulch of old compost and a layer of bubble wrap to cover the ground. I have made a small cold frame which I plan to cover them with in March. Hopefully they will grow from there. This year we have had a few icey cold snaps (no snow) , so it should be a good test - fingers crossed :blue thumb:

End of January I bough a rhizome from The Range: Canna, "The President". This will be my first attempt with a canna :fingers crossed:

I intend to grow it in a pot. Should I start it now (indoors)?

Most of my cannas are in the ground or in pots outside.......mild here but it shows cannas are reasonably hardy. I would say on a par with dahlias. :)

Hello "M", yes, start it off now indoors. To get maximum growth and early flowering it is essential to start them off as early as possible. Canna rhizomes usually grow fast so frequent potting on is important. Using a john innes compost for the penultimate and final potting is important too

Concerning canna virus, yes it is widespread and rampant these days. The only solution is to dig up and burn if virus is found. However, the best canna producers supply virus free stock. Avoid buying from garden centres or local nurseries....Most of the plants are infected including my own local favourite nursery where the entire stock was removed and destroyed

Depends if you have space to grow it on until around early May, or after the last frost.
They grow pretty fast in warm conditions, so for the moment I would say there is no immediate hurry, but if you are impatient then go for it.

I pot up my Canna Rhizomes around March the 14th , at 11:00AM give or take 5 minutes :snorky:
I find they show in around 7 to 21 days . When they are getting a little big for indoors they go in the GH , back half of April. Plant them out mid - May. Deliver a few to family in planters for youngest grand-son to use as gaol posts :gaah:
They are a lovely plant , like husbands , they don't need much attention. Just a feed now and then and a dead head when flowering :blue thumb:

Cannas like Tropicana Black, Durban (some say these are the same but they are very different) and Pretoria soar to well over 9' here with flowers from mid summer well into late autumn.
For foliage, flowers and an exotic look cannas are unique......low maintenance too :)
                                Already shooting here
