Yes, I believe we're both referring to potting soil. I buy lots at the end of the season to have on hand over the winter. I have about 400 liters left of the soil I bought this fall. At about 1/2 the normal price

I have always used seed compost ( Normally Gro-Sure ) for starting my Chilli seeds . I sow them towards the end of January. They are normally ready to be pricked out into MPC about 5 weeks later.

I have a couple of bag of compost I bought about eight months ago, and which have been sitting sealed in the shed. Do I need to buy new ones?

I can't see why they would not be okay to use. Try it. You'll probably be glad you did.

I'm not disagreeing about using compost but I always start off by using kitchen paper. I put individual seeds spaced about 1.5" apart in the paper and put it in a seed sprouter dampen it and put to one side.

I now only group two types of chillies. The Naga seeds take about 10-14 days to sprout and the Shiney Hybrids take about 4-5 days. The hybrids give me 100% germination (I think @silu said that hers do too :blue thumb:) and the Nagas about 80% germination. Once they are about 1" high I pot on, in potting compost, into 2.5" pots. They normally take about 5 weeks before they need potting into larger pots (Nagas take even longer) and get repotted into 2 litre pots about April time (Nagas, when big enough get 3 litre pots).

I think that some of my chillies are in post#129

Me again. I'm really paranoid about my chillis. I got the germinator, and soaked the seeds for twenty-four hours, before sowing them. That was on first of January. Still waiting...

What concerns me a tad is that the soil is now as wet as it was when I did that. Should I be concerned?

Seeds are Carolina Reaper, Purple Cayenne, Devil's Tongue Yellow, Capsicum Chinese and Borg 9.
