@longk I really love the gentle wit of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, but although I've tried the Scotland Street books I've not been able to get into them. Mind you, I can now identify a Peploe :roflol:!

And here's me the opposite way round! I can't get into the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books despite enjoying the radio adaptation.

It's strange, usually people like all of a particular writer's books. I just couldn't warm to the Edinburgh characters, despite having a relative who is a genteel Edinburgh lady of advanced age who would fit right in with the cast of characters! I didn't know there was a radio adaptation of the Ladies Detective Agency, but I wish I had heard it.

@Gail_68 We have got a library full of hundreds of books but unless the book is really gripping and I can’t put it down then my attention span starts to wander. When I start reading the page my brain starts thinking of a totally different subject which then takes over and I then forget what I was reading in the first place.

I never had the problem when I was a kid and read everything and anything so was quiet a book worm but once I started work and had to concentrate on work stuff I found my reading ability dropped off and it never recovered:sad:

@Kandy I used to collect books mate and in the end I gave them away to neighbours and the library did welcome them :)...that's so weird in a way, your work affecting you where concentrating is concerned in a normal book...mind baffling

@Jack Sparrow By what you've said i'd keep with the short stories until you find what actually does suite you :)

Well I just started on a new book (A Noble Masquerade) by Kristi Ann Hunter and could I get in to it no way...so just got another (The Cursed Highlander) by Emilia Ferguson.

Hopefully I can settle in to this book tomorrow :)

Quote: "Back to history now, I'm about to read the first novel in a series. Viking Sword (The Earls of Mercia)".

Three quarters of the way through this book and it's like an endurance test, I don't think it's been near a proof reader. Words missing, words back to front and some of the spelling is terrible - not to speak of grammar. The story itself is predictable and weak so I won't be reading the rest of the series. Time to look for something else.

@Sheal That's what I've just had to do find another, only purchased it yesterday. I've noticed a lot of reviews comment on words, grammer and spelling as you've mentioned :)

I tend to read different books of widely different subjects at the same time, reading a few pages of each one at a time. The Book by my bedside is J R R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings which I have read many times but find myself travelling down the...........

It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,” he used to say. “You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to.”

with the Hobbits, Gandalf and Strider again and again, and always get lost in the book walking towards Mordor and the Mount of Doom.:dunno::heehee:

Proof readers aren't what they used to be. Many books are badly written now.

I've heard so many people say Lord of the Rings is a great read but I don't know if I could get into it.
