I'm late to this thread. :doh:There's definitely something about vinyl and I still have most of mine. Sadly they haven't been played for donkey's years - not having a turntable.

@pete did you progress from a needle to a stylus? I remember they had various grades, the more you paid the better they were. :)

Oh yes in the 70s I had those kind of stylus things, remember going for the arm that had the lowest tracking weight, a couple of grammes or so.
Still sounded the same to me though, crackle and scratchy in comparison to digital.

Believe it or not, but I had to undergo quite considerable training before I was certified to install cartridges and set turntables up - most of the ones I did were Shure or Ortofon, although we did some others, but you wouldn't believe how much difference it would make setting up a turntable properly.

Having said that, it has got to be over 20 years since I have done one now.

I have the Goldring 1042. It took ages to get it somewhere near, lots of adjusting, re-adjusting, a fiddly business. Does sound good though ;)

Goldring were absolute top notch in my book - their turntables were always pretty bullet-proof, with a nice balance between detail and warmth. I am not familiar with the 1042 - is it a reasonably new fellow?

It’s been around since the 90’s, and still a very popular cartridge..

                Oooooh, luvverly kit...... :drooling:

I may well have had one across the bench, but as mentioned above we mainly did Ortofon and Shure (no real reason why)....... having said that, we did see quite a few Lenco turntables over the years.

I got rid of my turntable over 20 years ago, and gave all my vinyl away on the very same day - then spent the weekend getting sloshed as I was so annoyed at myself for doing it! Never had one since, and certainly couldn't afford one now.

Thankfully, I was able a couple of years ago to treat myself to some nice modern kit - Yamaha RX-A2050 receiver (built like a brick outhouse), and Dali Zensor 5 AV package which to be fair to it sounds much better than you might consider. A tad over £5k retail at the time, and I got it all for just under £3k, which was a great deal.

I still have my old, beloved, cherished Sony TAFB920 QS amp, which currently drives my Sennheiser HD579's (my B&W DM601 MkII that are normally attached are currently on loan to my brother in law)

To be fair I don't think it is a "modern marketing" thing. Ever since I can remember hearing Abba's gold on vinyl ..well, you just couldn't beat it.. that crackle and like Pete said the fluff, the scratches..the rawness of the sound.

Going back 10 years ago I got into the drum and bass scene, 3 of my friends and I had a set of decks and we would regularly set them up in my kitchen and "get our mix on". 2 of the friends, still to this day, get their mix on and actually produce music alongside. I don't have the decks anymore but still have the vinyl and very recently had some of these given to me (The Monkees vinyl is not mine, honest!).. not a bad collection for a 28 year old

A good friend of the other half owns a music shop which sells vinyl and it used to before she took over, I don't see it as a modern thing but I can see what you mean when they have those turntable case players in curry's etc and calling them "retro"...is that what you was getting at?

Not heard the Zensor 5’s, but they seem to be well regarded

My first ‘proper’ HiFi featured B&W speakers, the DM4’s. They were powered by a Yamaha receiver, the CR420. Front end was a Rotel turntable (no cd back then) with a Shure N95ED. Later on I fitted a V15Mk3. Although the V15 was around three times the price of the N95, I didn’t think it sounded as good as the N95, just not as musical, somehow

I know what you mean, it’s a common perception, but trust me, vinyl really can sound great :blue thumb: I could go on, but it would probably get boring...
