Wait until later in the season when they haven't sold any, and they will reduce it to the proper price of £20

I don’t understand why people sell things online but don’t include dimensions. When you are impertinent enough to ask for measurements they just guess. What’s the point of that?

My wife spotted a second hand greenhouse today. I got her to ask the size. The reply was “about 2 metres x 1.5 metres”. That’s very vague. If I bought it, it would need to fit in the gap between the shed and the fence. Up to 2 metres is ok. I would say it’s probably a 6x4.

Anyway, by the time I’d had a chance to study it somebody else had bought it.

My wife went to look at this greenhouse in the end as the other person was a no show. It had a couple of panes of glass missing and the door was off its moorings but otherwise it was in good nick. The chap who was selling it insisted she took it there and then. Unfortunately it was a bit too big to go in her car so she left it.

              Technology.
We had a Kitchenaid Coffee machine for ten years. It was sort of either on or off. It was a bit of a cast steel beast weighing in at 28lb It did have two boilers so you could brew and steam at the same time. It went wrong a few times and had been replaced once. It cost me eighty-two quid at the beginning of last year, then it went wrong again in October, but in the meantime the service agents had ceased trading and Kitchenaid had put it with the Hotpoint group, who wanted £132 to fix it. So I had enough. I bought a Smeg, it's red and retro looking as was the Kitchenaid.
This is really sophisticated. You can set the temperature, the volume of water it dispenses for either one cup or two and how long it stays on "standby," before it turns itself off.
Sometimes I think the whole world goes to sodding "standby." We couldn't buy a replacement TV last year with an "on/off" switch so we have to turn it off at the mains.

Anyway, last week this new coffee machine was showing an orange light.
So digging out the instructions and wading through pages of 'elf n' safety, before I came to anything worth reading, I found that the light indicated that the boiler needed de-scaling.

              How did it know?

Smeg sell descaler at around £8 a pop.

Nothing needs descaling in this area as the water is very soft. In fact in the days when you needed water to top up car batteries, you could take it straight from the tap.

Further reading told me I could set the water hardness between soft, medium and hard. So presumably it'd been set on hard as a pre-set "just in case." I imagine the light is triggered by the number of times you use it. So I re-set it to soft, which I guess disables the feature and it hasn't come on since.

I can't think of Smeg without remembering Wallace and Gromit, in their kitchen they've a dome top refrigerator with the name "SMUG" on the front!

                Ground rent.
Our house is leasehold well the land is, with only about 940 years to go.
The ground rent is £9 a year. Before internet banking, I paid by cheque, the instructions always asked you to not staple the cheque to the invoice and they always offer to sell you the lease for nearly £1,000. (Work that one out).

The notice arrived today, as usual there's in big print, "Please pay by internet banking." But I won't. If they want to keep chasing me for just £9 every year. they'll get a cheque sent second class post, (stapled to the invoice!). Someone will have to pay it in at a bank.

I get annoyed when I am in the 3rd lane overtaking a lorry, the lorry pulls back into the first lane, and the car that was behind the lorry accelerates into the void, leaving me stranded in the outside lane.

I don't know all the ins and outs about English and Welsh? ground rent but do know that the Scottish equivalent (Feu Duty) was abolished around 2004. When I 1st moved up to Scotland in the 1970s I worked for a short period for a firm of solicitors and collected Feus. Ridiculous, some were less than £1! Surely it is time for the Westminster Government to do the same and abolish ground rents.

The due date for our ground rent, is 24th March, so I've dated the cheque the same date. I'll send it off and they'll have to have it kicking around their office until it can be paid in. But I've a felling that post-dated cheques may be a thing of the past and they'll be able to pay it anyway.

But as they say, "It's the thought that counts!"
