I like photography for the feeling of achievement whenever I take what I think is a good shot and enjoy seeing the sometimes unexpected result. I hate it when people get all technical and start showing graphs of this and that, expounding on how this method is the only one to use, etc and you get that on some of the Photography Forums and also on some of the Astronomy Forums where they argue about a technical level that irrelevant to the normal person. To be honest, my Pentax K5, now superseded by several newer more advanced Pentax models, is technically and optically, above my own abilities to get the best out of it. It's the same with my Telescope, eyepieces, and CDD camera, they're at a technical level that goes above my reasonable eyesight and ability to differentiate between the new Super Duper, super expensive lenses and the fairly high quality kit I have now. I just enjoy the whole experience of taking images either with my Pentax or with the Telescope rather than the snobbishness of having the "best of the best" or demonstrating through scientific and technical graphs how one certain camera/lens is better than any other.:dunno::coffee::snorky:

I so agree with you Armandii. As soon as anyone gets technical or snobbish, I don`t want to know. As far as all these ''guidelines'' go, I couldn`t really care less if the pictures are enhanced, clipped, drawn on, or painted pink in the 'friendly' competitions. The best thing about our little competition is the taking part, and trying to use what`s left of the little grey cells - sorting out what would fit the theme (which I`m finding extra challenging this month)

Take my pictures with a red camera. Liked the colour and the fact that it has this lenses that goes in and out...great for seeing what the neighbours are buying too!

I'll get my tongue out of my cheek now.

I have always voted with my heart. If a shot makes me smile or feel some other emotion. I consider that as technical as a friendly competition should get.

Maybe 'Bliss' can be found if we all look hard enough - I was thinking about a Tracy Emin type photo of my nice comfy bed with a good book and both of my dogs :snorky: - clipped in the shape of mickey mouse with a frilly black border (just to be saucy)

                  Hi Woo,

I think that most of our members wouldn't understand what those terms mean :noidea: . I know you explained them to me once but I've forgotten! Sorry! :)

I guess that 'file conversion' means reducing the size to 600 x 800 (don't know how to do that but assume that when I drag and drop my pictures the forum software does it for me).

Don't know what the others mean . Could it be explained simply in No. 6?

                  As I don't understand them I don't do anything :)

This is always a tricky one for me. I sometimes find the light levels are wrong for taking photos - so don't take them :dunno:. Having said that, I've found a setting on my camera, although it's an old camera, that is for taking snow pictures. This stops the snow looking grey.

I'm able to enter that into a competition as the picture is 'as taken'. Similarly, the examples by @martin-f can be almost the same (I think) if taken on zoom. That way there's no manipulation of the photo.

So, all the photos I enter into the competition are exactly as taken. Works for me :dbgrtmb:

Wow! That's a useful feature! I find that if I use the "proper" camera (digital SLR), I get grey-blue snow. The smart phone is better, especially if you get it to focus on a patch without snow, and then move to the shot you want (couldn't do that yesterday - there was snow everywhere!).
I started using a white-balancer app for my drawings. Even photos taken under a daylight bulb had grey paper, when in fact its pristine white. The only way to get white paper is to take the shots outside. This is risky, as I might ruin the drawing with a single drop of rain. Five hours of my time, and any potential £25 sale, down the plug-hole! The app does what it says on the tin - it makes the white paper look white!

                          Here's the crocus photo before...

This is typical of the settings.

This is with the camera on automatic.

And then on the snow setting
                            P1020532.JPG

I found the snow setting on the 'landscape' option. It had a few choices and I just had to scroll to the correct one. So it was just a turn of the dial on the camera. I could have changed the 'white balance' but that's a bity more of a nuisance than just putting it on 'snow'.
