      Unchained Melody has been mentioned.

I've always liked one of the original versions.

This one by Roy Hamilton. It was featured along with a lot of mid-fifties classics, in the first series of the Australian TV drama shown on BBC TV, "A Place to Call Home."

In jazz, you can get a tune that inspires someone to turn it into another tune.

A jazz saxophonist James Moody, a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, took "I'm in the Mood for Love." Written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields and created an improvisation around the chord structure.

Later, Eddie Jefferson took the improvisation and turned it into another song with lyrics calling it "Moody's Mood for Love." You need a really big vocal range to sing it.

This has become a "jazz standard."

Here's one of no end of versions. The original tune first then the later one.

I saw Louis Armstrong at the Empress Hall in London, in 1956, when I was still at school. The support acts were Sid Philips and his band and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

It was originally written as a prison lament for a film called Unchained (released in the fifties). What I dislike about most versions is that they're all cheesy grins, pitch perfect with overblown orchestral backing. Here's a clip from the film............

Anyway, today the children at work have had to listen to The Jams singles and B sides. Twice!

I even put a mix disc together for them...............

I've always liked Candy Dulfer a jazz saxophonist, she toured with Prince once.

I've got a lot of mp3s on my laptop.
I play them through this on a shelf over my desk. It's an old non-working fifty-odd year-old jukebox wallbox that doubles as a telephone directory. That lap-top wasn't quite as old. This bookshelf goes right up to the ceiling The top shelves house some of my LP collection, the ones that rarely get played, but I'd never throw them away. The shelves don't bend it's my old camera distorting the image.

Crikes! That is a blast from the past that I had totally forgotten about............

If you can find the film that this was for I really do recommend it. It was called De Kassière (Lily Was Here outside of The Netherlands) and was released in 1988 or '89 as I recall.

The actor that (I think) you're confusing with Herbert Lom is Adrian Brine. He was an English director an occasional actor who lived in Amsterdam.

I like to play this now and again. Sad that she's gone, I thought she was rather overshadowed by her father's reputation, in that some compared her unfavourably with him.

I love the backing singers' contribution. It makes the song.
