Plants you regret planting

Nice. Which one is that Harry?

 

Freddy , I grow a vast array of two Canna types . The one above is Canna Tropical Red. I think this is a kind of generic name which covers a lot of general cannas. It flowers very well and to the top of the flower will be about 6 feet . Looks really good when the sun is setting behind it , and it shines through the leaves. Not bad £0.99 for 5 seeds off Ebay.

 

Cannas grow enormously down here.....survive in the ground over winter as well as in pots outside. Ok, it is mild here but cannas are worth any trouble to those in cold areas. They can be so impressive that nobody should regret growing them. I certainly dont.

Plants I regret growing? Not so much now but rhus typhina, artemisia limelight, houttynia chameleon, euphorbia griffithii, bamboo, bluebells, muscari, some alliums, ( those that spread and seed everywhere) oxalis purpurea and some of the running grasses spring to mind. They are beautiful I know but crocus would not be planted here now; I have lots of them but they are weedy out of flower and spread to outstay their welcome

 

One of my step daughters old school friends regrets planting 20 marijuana plants in an outhouse. He is now doing 2 years in Strangeways

 

Buddliea flower power.. what a poor grower. Think I had about 4 flower cones on it last year.

Also the goat willow. Big rookie mistake. Saw it growing in a pot.. assumed it was a stray Apple pip from my daughter so stuck it in the ground. 5 years later and some god awful pruning it is the ugliest "tree" anyone ever did see.

Nothing.. so far I adhere to the advice of those most experienced than I, in regards to things like crocosmia and certain japanese anemones. I think it also depends a lot on your soil, clay is more difficult to dig all the roots from than sand

 

Ivy.

 

I quite like ivyits the only thing that's holding my fence up

 

Ivy "ate two panels" in my fence so I had to dig it out, (it wasn't even mine, it was next door's) and I had to buy two new panels!

 

I sympathise dhr, the fence I was talking about has been between my neighbour and I for at least 24 years! We're not even sure what type of fence it was originally. However we both love it, it's just outside our kitchen windows, the blackbirds nest in it each year and it adds to the natural ' cottagey ' look we love. A while ago, after really bad gales, we though it was a gonna we discussed removing it and fencing the boundary. We both agreed if it could be saved it should be It is now tied to various points ( discretely) by eyelets? And good old washing line
If you have a new fence and you don't want ivy then I think I'd be its all about where and the look you want

 

I liked the ivy covered fence more my personal taste

Not a fan of ivy except for Buttercup. Surprisingly lovely to look at in spring and summer with its butter yellow leaves. Behind salvia amistad it contrasts superbly. It is used here but kept trimmed

 

Our ivy got a good haircut today, I agree it needs to be kept trimmed, ours likes to spread to the guttering and under the roof tiles
