What are you reading? 2019

Just finished reading The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Currently dipping in and out of The Best of Myles, Flora Britannica, 10 Million Aliens and Clash of Civilisations.

 

I've always struggled with Le Carre but his books make excellent TV series, films and radio adaptations. In my pile of books to get to I have The Third Man by Graham Greene - I hope that the same doesn't apply to him.
I've just finished The Wire In The Blood by Val McDermid. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for a good thriller (easy reading, pick me up put me down kind of things) and she writes a damned good thriller.

 

I finished this book two weeks ago. It's taken a while because the print was so small but it was a good read and enlightening. Although non fiction author Sarah Fraser has to a certain degree written it in novel form making it easier to take in. Simon Fraser was a complicated man with a complicated life - that life dedicated to the clans of Scotland and his estate of 500 square miles. Considered a traitor by the English government he was the last British noble to be executed and in my opinion that was not justifiable. If Sarah Fraser has her facts right then I don't see why Simon has such notoriety.

I'm currently reading a novel by Philippa Gregory called 'Earthly Joys'. A story supposedly about the life of John Tradescant, famous gardener to 17th century nobility. With little research on the authors part there's not enough to stave off boredom - the story plods along. Just over halfway through, I'll finish it and then see if I can find a biography of John's botanical life and travels.

 

Done this book in now on two the 2nd in line as there's 3 in total...wished the prices stopped the same though

@"M" Small Great Things - any good?

 

It's a light read because, after all, it is a Jodi Picoult novel.
But she is a thought provoking writer. So far, and as I would expect with her, there are some very strong characters emerging and the story is based on race, perceptions, biases. I'm only a few chapters in but I'm keen to see how this story unfolds. I just hope it isn't an anti-climax finish.

in the new year another of me Xmas gifts ....REALLY enjoyed it - it was a most thought-provoking emotional read. A new author for me but will definitely read more of hers again
