Well, it's your garden, lucius, but it looks okay to me:dunno::) Just how wide, long and deep is it?
Don't have the pond too shallow as it could freeze solid and that wouldn't be good for wild life, so I would recommend at least 24 inches deep for a wildlife pond. My pond is around 36 inches deep in most places as I wanted to give aquatic wildlife depth in which to hide. I see you've put the shelves in at the sides which is great:thumbsup:. Visiting wildlife will need a place to shelter and hide so marginal plants and plants on the bank sides will provide that, while also softening the edges, and making the pond look natural, while also removing excess nutrients from the water which helps prevent algae forming.

They never do, lucius., when they're in the raw state:dunno::doh::snorky: But once you've planted in marginals and bank plants it's just amazing how quickly they grow and naturalise the pond.

One other thing, a wildlife pond benefits from a inch or two of soil/mud on the bottom which provides a living place for some pond life. Decorative formal ponds which, like Riley says, do need a collar or low wall around them, but doing that to a wildlife pond would make it look unnatural which is the opposite to what you're aiming for. Formal ponds also don't usually have that soil/mud on the bottom as their prime purpose is to look "controlled", making a statement in the garden.:coffee:

Finished sifting compost with my new gadget - £35 and very sturdy, highly recommend it, made the job so much easier!

Spread the end product over most of the beds, hopefully will help give a little extra protection from this cold snap. Lemon, gardenia and sweet pea seedlings have all been relocated back inside for a bit; I'm away for work for a few days and not sure how cold it's going to get here, so not going to risk it!

:ThankYou: for the replies. I dug a little more today and then sat in my pond hole with a coffee ( nowhere to sit in front garden ). Two people on horses went past, giving me an odd look :snorky:. Gorgeous :hotsun: today and warm when not in the shade.

I had a look at Bradshaws for liners and didn't realise that they also sell preformed ponds. This led me to look a little more and I've found someone on the Island who has a Lotus Toughline Woodpecker preformed pond, brand new ( he says ) for £40. Going to have a look tomorrow.
