    Howdy,

I'm not an accomplished cati bod so was wondering if you'd be able to advise.

Accumulated this selection of little cacti but now sick of the mini pots (makes watering awkward.

    image.jpeg

Would they do ok if i planted all the mini pots together? Do they need to be a specific distance apart?

The tall spikey thin ones-are they actually cacti?! Got them in a pack from ikea last year but no idea what they actually are!

Also had this thing a few years but the end looks like it rotted and has now dried out but has got a big off shoot. I recall it had a pretty red flower originally. What should I do with that to make it look better-the crumpled dry bit isnt too pleasing on the eye.

      A cati bod eh?

To be honest the last time I had cacti I threw them and my toys out the pram after the 100th time getting stuck with the sticky things.

Maybe just simplify the display into a few containers, not one big trough. They must be exactly 25.6mm apart...

I think you need to be careful, I got a feeling you have plants with about three different watering requirements.
You could probably get away with all the spikey ones in the same pot.

Far right looks like it maybe a christmas cactus, think really that needs its own pot.

You might get away with the Aloe, (far left), and the long pencil shaped succulent,(sansevieria is it? to the right), in the same pot.

Last pic looks like the remains of one of those grafted cacti, the grafted bit is usually brightly coloured, but always dies off eventually, leaving you with the rootstock.

oopsy I meant a Cacti - bod. ha ha. It was early!

Thanks @pete. def keeping the Christmas catcus and aloe separate.

I'll sick all of the little ones in one trough then. The spikey tall ones on the right enar the xmas cactus I will put in one pot together. Just wanted fewer pots as it's awkward dusting on that shelf.

Do you think I should chuck that one then? Or plant it up again but putting the dead bit under the soil?

Are you supposed to feed cacti with anything to help them flower? I literally just give them a scrap of water now and again.

I wouldn't put anything in the same pot as the Christmas cactus.

I'd put the tall spikey ones in with the Aloe, if you must.;)

I'd be inclined to chuck the rootstock cacti.

You can give cacti a week high potash feed in the summer, very occasionally, but only when growing.
Water more as the temperatures rise and the sun gets warmer, but always err on the side of slightly under watering rather than overwatering.

The spiney kinds of cacti, in general, only flower well if they have a fairly cool dry resting period overwinter, which is why cacti are often a bit disappointing when grown as house plants with warm conditions all year.

              Thanks for the great advice!

I have an idea where to put them now - the boot room isn't heated at all but it still insulated so might put them on a shelf in there instead. Hopefully that will give them a cool dry resting period over winter in future! :)

poops - that rules the boot room out. Cool winter conservatory it is then.

I would keep cacti in their pots but group them in troughs or other containers using sand or grit; plants can be interchanged etc but presented as a group. Distance apart? Purely for aesthetic reasons but with regard to not touching one another.
The christmas "cactus" should remain on its own but, if needed, repotted in spring. The aloe too in its own pot

I use Forceps for handling Cacti. My cacti are outside so the forceps is brill for weeding between them.
