Dry with total low mid grey cloud cover and that brutal wind that's been around for too long. The temperature rose to 31f, which is the highest in over a week, but has now dropped down to 24f again.:wallbanging::snorky:

This week, in terms of weather and driving, has been both a cause for anxiety coupled with a cause for joy! The warnings provoke an anticipation/anxiety of poor conditions which, once on the road, was (by comparison to the warnings) pure joy! Not saying "ideal" ;) :heehee:
However, today's drive home was a case of an ice layer over the top of the snow whilst more snow fell! :gaah: Hardly ideal! :nonofinger:

While it is very interesting to take a nostalgic trip back in time to a Winter more than half a century ago, the fact is, you are not comparing apples with apples but apples with pears! Roads are far busier for one.
Road Traffic Acts have altered; considerably!
Distractions (which are accountable for an increase in RTC's) such as mobile phones were never a feature more than 50 years ago.
The modern generation have limited experience of driving in these conditions, if any!
Modern generations drive in a style more akin to the "Grand Theft Auto" school of motoring, (their initiation in many cases) than the Highway Code.

But, the one redeeming feature exists in *this* comment:
As do they all NOW a days  (the same cannot be said for media reports).

We've had the worst of it now I think, temp hovering around freezing, it reached the giddy heights of 0.5 earlier! The main roads are clear, the paths are not. The garden is still under a hefty covering. Our bathroom sink drainpipe thawed this evening :) it's been frozen for 2 days

As far as we personally are concerned, all this media "fuss" is well justified for once, altho I agree more often than not it is a load of panic for nothing. On this occasion however, for those who think otherwise count your lucky stars as around these parts are dire like many other places. We have not been able to get down our drive far less have a passable road for 5 days now. Our village about 2 miles away is currently experiencing a long power cut. Luckily we are still ok electricity wise. There is no milk or bread in the village evidently, only know this as a neighbour walked here to see if we were ok and had walked the 2 miles to the shops only to discover the "cupboard was bare" A 4 mile round trip for nowt, quite hard.
People moan about lorries being on the roads when the conditions are awful but look what happens when lorries stop hauling produce, bare shelves. It's not the drivers it's the company owners who should be castigated, drivers can only do what they are told to do and fair enough don't have lorries carrying non essential supplies delivering but if you are told to get on with it or lose your job what do you do? My daughter has her class 1 licence and there were times she was told to take a load (refrigerated meat) when she felt the conditions were pretty dangerous to take artics on minor roads.
I too well remember 1963 and while this situation will not last for months and months as was the case then what we have experienced for the last 5 days is well worse (because of the high freezing winds and drifting) than anything I remember since then and worse than 2010/11.
Unless the temperatures rise significantly or best solution we get rain we could be cut off for some considerable time. 5ft+ snow drifts do not melt quickly.I also read that the police are getting seriously fed up with clowns who are out driving when they really don't need to be, cluttering up the roads and preventing the ploughs from being able to do their job properly if they get stuck. I for 1 think people should be fined for making non emergency trips during periods of extreme conditions it is so selfish.
New born lambs have died (heard this from my neighbouring farmer who has many more ewes to lamb over the next couple of weeks so all in all a bloody mess. I haven't even had the heart to look at my garden, with these ghastly east winds I fear for my dozens of Rhododendrons some of which I have had for over 25 years. With the central heating having packed in so no hot water for 5 days and struggling with a very bad cold/flu life is not a bowl of cherries atm. Hope others are fairing better.
My friends on GC normally find me quite cheerful? I sincerely hope they do. My cheery demeanour has somewhat up and left me for the time being.

I sympathise, we usually never get " bad weather " being in a town centre but this has been really nasty. We've had 20 car collisions locally, unheard of round here!
I can't imagine how difficult it is where you live, I hope it improves sooner rather than later.
It really gets my goat when people dismiss this weather as " just winter "
Stay safe, look after yourselves :grphg:

I wish you well soon Silu. :)

A grey sky here today, that just about sums the weather up. Slightly warmer at -1C/30F.

It has been snowing since about 4pm. We have just made our way home after an evening out. The roads are treacherous. Both my wife and I have early starts tomorrow so there will be probably be some vigorous digging involved. Having had a snow free day, I was hoping we had seen the last of it. I guess that was the proverbial calm before the storm.

Well it doesn't seem to have snowed anymore last night after a full day's worth (yeaterday has been the worst for us in mentmore).

Still bitterly cold. Even bumbler only had a wee out the back door-and that is saying something!

Pond's still flowing luckily. Poor fish!

There's usually a step up here but you can hardly see it now.
