    Hello all,

New to the forum but not to gardening.

We have a typical new build garden (built around 2004) which we moved in to in 2014. Thought the garden would be OK but it is, as appears to be the normal situation, full of builders rubble just under the surface over a lot of the garden. To make it worse the house was built on a brown field site and there is also loads of clay around. I think it will be a very long term project.

Over the past 3.5 years we have done some basics (she’d, greenhouse, patio and temporary pond to house the fish we brought with us) to allow us to try and enjoy the garden. The major work starts this year.

To make matters more interesting (?) we have moved from a house with a south facing garden to one that is N/NE facing so loads to get to grips with there.

It’s great to be here and hopefully loads to learn as well.

    Cheers,

    David

I think you have achieved quite a bit so with your basics. :blue thumb:

I can relate to your challenge of a N facing garden - mine errs a little more to the NW, but not by much :heehee:

What major works do you have planned for this year?

                Welcome to GC :dbgrtmb:

Absolutely nothing wrong with clay soil. It's very nutritious but takes a bit of work to break it up. It will take a lot of compost (soil improver) to get it right but you will be well rewarded.

My garden faces North, and during the hotter months I am really glad of it. There are loads of plants that love the shade, and it`s just a case of growing the right ones :)

Hi all, thank you for the welcomes.

Hi “M” Briefly the major works include starting on moving the pond, at the minute it is half raised and up against the fence on one side of the garden. I want eventually for it to be fully underground and away from the fence as that side of the garden is too much in the way of painted fence panels, a bit of greenery bewteeen us and next door is needed. The rear garden is on a slope towards the house so another plan is to level a lot of it out by a small terrace. The greenhouse also needs to be adjusted as the base it’s on has sunk at one end slightly. It’s not a big space and will hopefully start a sort of blog with photos when the weather improves.

Hi shiney, the clay soil is unfortunately a lot of clay subsoil, it would make good potters clay it’s so solid and fine in places. We are going to work at the bits we need to but much of it is mixed in with builders waste (wood, bricks, stone, tiles, the straps from round the bricks when delivered, coke cans, plastics and the list goes on). So far we have replaced approx 8 tons in both the front and back garden.

Hi Ian, I’m in the Ribble Valley.

                        Cheers,

                        David

The ribble valley is very pretty. I once missed the main road and ended up driving through the trough of bowland. It made a very scenic journey.
