I agree. In Rutland, [one of my favourite Counties], the many small Villages deck out the Highways, etc with displays that are fabulous. They're not funded by the local Authorities but by the local Villagers using cash and plants, while also having Village Garden Open Days and the whole thing is just stunning.:love30: It takes a lot of thought, time and energy to do these floral displays and so they get my admiration.

Thanks, you managed to put into words my feelings on the matter. In the great scheme of things, I actually think it’s good value.

In the town near us the council maintain the plants (flowers, shrubs, trees) on the roundabouts but they are all sponsored by local companies (they have their names on their roundabouts) and the council charge them a lot more than it costs to maintain them. They vary between 5k and 20k per annum. :blue thumb: There are also miles of crocuses and daffodils on the verges.

Council tax! (That's actually not what I call it but whilst on here I should mind my language!) We pay £2018.38 a year, which is fine but I'd really like to know what I'm getting for my money! My recycling bin & general rubbish bin is emptied (I pay extra for my brown bin/garden rubbish to be emptied)....whatelse do I get???

We get all our rubbish taken away (green/garden bin every week) but are paying £2700 :yikes:

No other services around. No street cleaning, three lampposts in two miles of road and none in the village, village police station closed eight years ago, nearest bus is one mile away and only two per day, footpath not looked after and I have to do it, local authority have a nice town hall (14 miles away) - can't think of any service accessible from here, but we have no religious groups calling, no door to door salesmen and no kids knocking on Halloween. :heehee:

                                Typically...

                                1. The local library: In addition to book-lending services, public libraries usually offer community classes, special events and computer facilities – which your Council Tax pays for.
                                2. Police and fire services: Both receive funding from multiple sources, one of which is your Council Tax. Street cleaning and waste collection: Rubbish collection, recycling and street cleaning are all paid for from the Council Tax pot. This includes commercial collections too.
                                1. Water and sewerage services: In Scotland, Council Tax includes the cost of water and sewerage services.
                                1. Parks and recreation: Maintenance and upkeep for public spaces, parks, galleries, theatres, museums, leisure centres and community swimming pools is all paid for with Council Tax. This can also extend to museums, which means free entry.

                                2. Social services programs: This means everything from day care for children to assistance for vulnerable individuals such as those with dementia.

                                3. Schools, education and youth services: In England, schools are funded by the central government’s Dedicated Schools Grant. However, Council Tax is sometimes used to help boost education and fund programs such as after-school care or at-risk youth services. In Scotland, schools are funded entirely by Council Tax.
                                1. Housing provision and advice: Council housing is funded through the local council, often with the use of this tax. People who are homeless or living in unsafe conditions are prioritised.

                                2. Community development: Councils can use the tax revenue to undertake projects which might benefit the growth of their community. Glasgow City Council for example, recently funded the completion of the M74 motorway and Riverside Museum with Council Tax.
                                1. Street lighting and road and bridge maintenance: Many road bridges are owned and maintained by the council so maintenance and repairs need to be paid for by this tax. Street lighting and council car parks are also included.
                                1. Administration and record keeping: Council Tax pays for the cost of local elections, as well as administrative issues, including registrars of marriages, deaths, and births. Mortuary and cemetery services may also be covered by Council Tax, as well as the administrative costs of running a council.

                                  Sorry for the numerical discrepancy.
